New to Coyote/Bobcat Hunting
« on: October 22, 2012, 04:29:49 PM »
So recently I have found an interest in hunting small game
couple quick questions

I have a Marlin 336 and a Marlin Model 60
Are either of these rifles good to hunt with?
I fear that the model 60 is under powered yet the 336 is too much gun

hopefully I would be keeping the hides.
I would be hunting Westen washington

Any tips or advice would be great. thanks for reading

I wouldn't worry too much about getting a predator specicic gun right away. Save your money for fuel and get out there and do some calling. After you get some kills and have a good idea of what type of terrain and calling you like will help you decide which rifle to buy.

I too am new to hunting, and thinking of going for coyote since I wasn't able to get anything else so far.
I thought I read somewhere you couldn't sell the hides? Who would you sell them to, and what are the prices like on them?

:) You can sell the hides, a rabbit will be fine. Find coyotes, look for sign, call ALOT of times, be very sneaky, watch the wind. Keep at it.

If you're just hunting the WETSIDE/Westside.....all you really need is a shotgun with 00 Buck.

Rabbit distress will do you just fine. With a good open reed call like Bearmanrick's RR1 you can do rabbit distress and coyote vocals with the same call. A howler will come in handy though. Ater 10-15 min of distress if nothing shows try some howling then pup distress. Watch downwind of the sound because they will try and wind you most of the time. Try and call so your downwind is in the biggest opening thats available so they have to expose themselves from cover to get a wiff. That's where a decoy and electronic can help the most. You can put yourself in position to snipe them when they come in. Good luck and keep at them! Also, for a shotgun I would recomend #4 buckshot or hevi shot t. Really need to pattern it, it's just as important as sighting in your rifle.

You'd want #4 buck. 00 buckshot will have too many holes in the pattern. I have used lead BB's.

Yes, #4 buck or hevi shot t dead coyote. 00 buck will be devestating if you connect but only has 15 pellets in a 3" shell. #4 buck has 34. General rule is 8 or more hits in a 8" circle is minimum for reliable kills. Be ready to put a second round into one. Especially if they are not down. Need to pattern shotguns before hunting. Took me a few outings to get a good combo.

i pack a 22-250 or 223 with a shot gun #4 or 00 on almost every stand and i hunt in the middle of open fields, trees, draws, sage brush etc. had more dogs at 20 yds than at 100yds. get a variety of calls you never know whats going to work that day. have also picked off dogs at 500 with my 22-250. most important thing is getting to know your gun how and where it shoots and get out there with some calls and find out what works.
good luck

What - you can sell hides? Shoot I didnt know that! I just let them rot or give them to this chick in kirkland. (she is probably selling them!)

Hey Ryno, whats up dude, long time. Are seriously telling him not to buy a new gun!? Hell YES buy a new gun dude!! Then if you dont like it or want a different one, then buy that one too! And another, and another.... :chuckle:

And remember, when you hearing howling dogs and you howl or bark back, alot of times they wont answer or will just shut up all together. But that doesnt mean they are (oops NOT) coming in for a look so STAY STILL and keep your eyes PEELED! But I dont think I've ever got one to come in on a howl, always distress, rodent, rabbit, or pup. I've had them answer, but most of the time they clam up. A week or two back it sounded like the whole damn westside population was yipping in the "woods" behind my house, I kicked open the back door and let out a couple barks and locator howl - crickets. So I tried a challenge howl. They didnt make another noise all night.

I need to get out & dead some dogs but between work, soccer & fishing I just dont have the time anymore. Plus I started a part-time at Home Depot to save the extra money to buy a boat. So now anything remotely close to "free-time" is long gone. That was stupid :bash: but a year from now when I am in my new Trophy I'll look back with a smile! I hope!

Good luck fatrobber and welcome to predator hunting!

I have the best luck like within an hour or two of 1st light. But I think hour before sunset is good too. But I've also got them in the middle of the day in the dead heat of the noon sun. I think this time of year you should be able to find them most any time of the day???

Cool - thanks for the invite. I'm not real good at planning ahead, I kinda decide the night before and then head out last minute. I have a couple of private little spots I do really well at, one in particular in Granite, but everytime I take someone out there we dont call nothing in so they think I'm crazy for going there. (or if we do someone falls asleep, shoots over them, or doesnt see them come in and then spooks them! - yes you KNOW who you are!) But I got pictorial proof!

I just havent been able to get out in so long and lately any time I do get out I've been hitting the water for silvers. Ryno, FC, predatorpro & coyote cowboy, all gave up on me and never call since I always turn them down!

But I will keep it in mind and shoot you a PM if I can. In the meantime get out there and kill 'em all - well not ALL of them - and show us the pics!

MORNINGS are probably the best, but have had luck howling and distress at all times of the day. start out with distress the fall back to howling until you get your howling figured out (which means learning to speak coyote). those of you that step out of your house and howl because the coyotes are, that will never work. they know where you house is just the same as you and its not likely that a coyote will be holwing off you porch. :bdid:

Overall I'd say you are right but - they do come up on my deck and porch quite a bit, I woke to one chasing my cat around our deck at like 3am. And granted, they arent going to sit on my deck & bay but I have had one in the rear of the yard (I got a decent sized yard) howling. Near the back of my property there is a good sized undeveloped area with a slight draw that backs up to a large farm type property and they all hang out in there. I have called to them and exchanged howls once or twice in the past but it doesnt happen all the time. (I doubt they are thinking 'Oh thats the guy with the Primos Hot Dog/FoxPro) :chuckle: But I've been out in the middle of nowhere on the east side outside of Pasco and had the same thing happen, all kinds of howling and then when I chime in they stop. Of course I've had them answer at times too. Sure, they are going to react to certain conditions pretty much predictable, but I dont think you can put a blanket that covers everything and say "they will always do X Y Z" After chasing these little bastages for a few years now I know they surprise me all the time.

ok I will try to get out earlier in the AM
the spot I tried today turned out to be a bust.
far too overgrown.
however I did try out my call. didnt see anything big but a million and one tiny little birds all came out of no where
they hung aroundfor a bit and then they just left

luck of fate or are they attracted to it?

Scrap birds like Magpies and others, are no different than coyotes.  They're all looking for that next meal.  You calling in those birds is a good thing.   :twocents:

They eat any dieing thing. Early morning has been best for me BUT I have called them at noon  also.
got 9 in one day once in Montana, from 8 am to 5 pm. Learned ALOT of stuff that day, took me a year to figger out just what I learned. It's the little things folks. Lots of little things.

That I'm not sure of.  But any time I've had birds around me, the coyotes seem to be a little more relaxed.  My personal opinion is birds coming in is not a bad thing.  Just stay motionless as to not startle them all at once, because if there is a yote near by that you haven't spotted, he now becomes on full alert.  Again these are just my thoughts, someone else might have something different.  Good luck and have fun.

You have a spot in mind or want me to search out a couple?

Sound like a good way to spend a day to me. Chilling and Killing.

VarmintVentilator:
I have heard simmular things. If the birds are there feels like less of a threat. But the woods I was in was so thick there very well could have been a yote or 2 just had no visibility

Dang 9 in one day - that is killer. The only birds I hate to have around me is those damn crows. They are so annoying! I swear they are warning the ki-yotes, 'he's there behind that stump!" Little F**KS

I was out with FC one time and they were freaking driving me nuts so I finally gave up on the dogs & blasted one of the crows. Oh its sure did quiet down fast  :dunno: I was happy again!  :chuckle:

I would love to. Im trying to find a good or at least a potential spot. My one spot I had in mind was a bust.
You have a spot in mind or want me to search out a couple?

I don't know of any spots persoanlly, but I can do research online, and I'm always down to burn some rubber under my boots.

Ryno - set them up with that spot you took me & your buddy to where there was a bunch of signs. Or the other one you & I went to near Granite. I'm not gonna say anything about where it is unless you give the OK.

How far are you guys willing to travel? I know some good spots over on the eastside. Shoot nowadays those dirty things are damn near behind every bush!

Sure give out all my secret spots. Lol! It's all DNR land so open to everyone. Have never called anything in there though. Not for lack of trying. Bring your shotgun and your patience. I might be able to play tour guide next weekend.

I'm usually ok with driving out father. I go to Eastern Wa fairly often, actually going to visit some family out in Tri Cities this weekend.

Your not far from me if you can hear that racket. Those little *censored*s got 2 of my cats and our only chicken. They spend a lot of time in the fields just south of Olympic Nursery. They like to start up right after I let the dogs out and bring them back in. Just enough time to grab the .22 and the light. There were a dozen sets of eyes last time I had the light on them.
