UN GUN CONTROL
« on: October 23, 2012, 10:46:38 AM »
I changed the original post.  I have to admit, some of the Dick Morris' reports can get people riled up, including me.

I have replaced the original Dick Morris link with the NRA-ILA link and message:

Here is part of what the NRA-ILA had to say:

http://www.nraila.org/news-issues/articles/2012/rumor-control-un-att-and-poa,-bad-but-different.aspx

"The latest rumor making its way through the darker corners of the internet is an inaccurate spin on the U.N.'s never-ending mission to disarm the American people. The rumors vary, but some have wrongly claimed that the U.S. has secretly adopted a U.N. Arms Trade Treaty, subjecting Americans to the schemes of U.N. gun controllers.

The confusion stems from a misunderstanding of the differences between July's month-long U.N. Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) and the Second Review Conference for the U.N. Programme of Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons (POA) that took place August 27 through September 7. The ATT and POA, while having many of the same anti-gun supporters and objectives, are two distinct U.N. initiatives.

The ATT would be a legally binding treaty that would require parties to the treaty to adhere to the treaty's provisions, many of which (as proposed in July) are incompatible with our Second Amendment rights. For the treaty to be ratified it would have to be approved by a two-thirds vote in the U.S. Senate. During the July ATT conference, NRA conducted a successful campaign to stop the treaty. The treaty has been shelved for the moment, but there have been attempts to revive it.

The POA, on the other hand, is an attempt to create a voluntary international set of standards for the control of small arms. Under the program, states are encouraged to adopt these controls domestically and to report on their progress. Although many of the standards proposed in the POA process conflict with the rights of gun owners, the U.S. has participated in the discussions. However, no domestic legislation has been passed as a result. The POA is not an extension or alternative to the ATT."

Many have signed the Dick Morris petition and have sent emails to their representatives.  This is good to remind the President and our representatives that we are watching.

The NRA, USSA, SCI, NSSF are very good sources of information and good for information validation.

This again? The UN small arms treaty has no effect on the 2nd Amendment or the rights of American gun owners. It deals with the exchange of weapons between countries.

Mags, it doesn't matter. Even if you don't buy foreign made ammo or guns, other people do. Fiocci, Wolf, PMC, etc... When then there is a decrease in supply for a particular set of products, demand for substitutes goes up. You WILL pay more for guns and ammo if this passes, even if it it stays out of our laws and we remain the City on the Hill.

You'd better buy that .40S&W carbine sooner rather than later. I'd hate for you to win our little bet and then be in for sticker shock come November 7th. What a way to ruin a celebration of our demise.

I do buy foreign made guns and ammo. Nothing in the treaty suggests that trade of firearms or ammo will be effected. The other countries signing the treaty value their domestic firearms industries as well and damn sure want to keep selling to the US civilian market.

After reading the treaty, as far as I can tell, the only difference will be that a factory in Russia selling a crate of AK's to a distributor in the US will have to register the transaction with a 3rd party record keeper. This is mainly to create a paper trail in case those guns end up in the hands of a rebel group in the Congo.

We should always be vigilant about our rights, but I just don't see how this is an encroachment of our 2A rights. Nor do I think it will slow the flow of foreign made goods into the US civilian market.

BTW, I think for that Carbine, .45ACP loaded up with +P is the way to go.
