Greenhorn gets his first branched bull! (Peaches)
« on: October 24, 2012, 05:04:21 PM »
Well, I kept telling myself "Don't shoot the first bull you see" unless it is one of the big ones that I have caught on my trail cam in the last two months.  Well guess what?:bash:  I had told myself I was going to sit in my spot for 12 days straight to get one of these and I only lasted one day :bash:  Hadn't had a bull on the camera for two weeks.  Only saw a bird the first day.  The second day, I decided to chase after some other elk my dad and I had been watching and followed a bull bugling somewhere up ahead.  I finally came to the bottom of a clearcut and the herd was heading into the timber about half way up.  I only had a thin shot that I could see the cows heading into the timber through.  I finally saw the bull and had a short time to decided on the distance.  I was guessing about 400 yds but it was 360 and up at about a 45 deg. angle.  I hit him right through the top of the backbone and he dropped like a sack of rocks.  He was the first bull that I saw :bash:  I wish I could bring that bullet back.  That evening (Tuesday) after packing my elk out I went to get my trail camera and watched 4 cows and one of the big bulls that I had on my trail cam walk through my little meadow, 200 yds away! :bash:  I had a blast hunting the bulls early and am looking forward to doing it again (in another 10-15 years)! :)  I ended up packing up a chainsaw to get this bull out from under the trees where he got stuck.

I found this site as part of my scouting for my Peaches Ridge bull tag this year.  I have really enjoyed all of the friends that I have made and all of the support.  I have learned a pile about elk hunting this year even though I have been going for most of my life.  This is a great forum and thanks for the opportunity for letting me be a part of it.

nothing to sneeze at nice bull!!!
"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. nice job Greenhorn, i was looking at your tc pics yesterday and wondering how you were doing on your hunt.. Thats one of the hardest things of elk hunting is being mentally tuff and holding out and grinding it out till the end for the big one happens to the best of us!.. Congrats on your bull and that is a fine bull!..  Its funny, when you get a opportunity to hunt a premier unit for elk, i hunted with my dad on a permit hunt and he shot about a 300 inch 6x6 biggest bull he has killed and he was disappointed cause he had chances on much bigger.. You got to appriciate the hunt and look at the big picture and enjoy such a great hunt..  Congrats to ya!.
