Dodge power chip?
« on: October 25, 2012, 02:02:40 PM »
Are any of the power chips worth having, which ones are the best and which ones won't ruin your diesel engine?

Ruin your engine? Typically its the trans, rearend and tires that get ruined after installing a chip/programmer  :chuckle:

If it's an '06 or '07, I'd steer him to Edge CTS Monitor for gauges and a mild EFI live tune.
Older than that, I completely agree with the Edge JA and toss in the CTS too.

Yep, do the Edge Juice w/ Attitude and get the CTS for gauges.  About $950, new.
Suncoast builds a very good trans.  That should last you a very long time!!

What year?  We put a diablo powerpuck on friends 99.  Then Big Ass air filter and straight pipe.  Made significant power increase and very safe to run/tow with.  Oh yeah I also did diy boost elbow valve.  Now boosts at 29 instead of 18.  Egts stay below 1300 and pulls way better.  Any large increase will mean your fuel pump cant keep up.  All auto trans are junk and will go.  A custom build or aftermarket and torq converter will be required.
MAGA!  Again..

does the Edge Juice w/ Attitude improve mileage or is it just for power?  why the CTS guages 6x6in6?

As with any any power adder, it's all about the driver and how heavy your foot is.  Under normal driving conditions you should see a 10% ish fuel economy increase.  You'll likely never pay for the purchase of the J/A in the life of the truck in fuel economy if that's what you were wondering.
I assumed you did not have gauges currently installed, correct?
If not, and having a VP injection pump engine, you should get the accessories needed to monitor your fuel pressure, egt's and transmission temp at the minimum.  Turbo boost is another one you should consider.  The boost is good and also helps diagnose that a boost leak exists like intercooler boots, intake gaskets, pretty much anything on the charge air side.  If you tow heavy, you can get the rear differential temp sensor.  There's other things to monitor too if you choose too that utilize sensors an not reading off the ECM, like oil pressure, oil temp just name two.
I have mechanical gauges in my '05 and a CTS in my '07.  I like the mechanical better for a quick glance read while driving but I like that I can I read 12 or so different readings on the CTS.

Smarty, first choice, with guages.  Edge J/A 2nd choice.  I have a Bullydog on my 07, came with the truck.  It's ok, makes good power on the old Crazy Larry setting, but I don't like it.  Side by side with an Edge, it overfuels more (more smoke) and EGT's are higher.
Of course these thigns are updated regularly by the mfrs and I'm relaying experinece with 5-8yr old technology and programs.  Get a Smarty.
