Kids need a hunting mentor near Lacey
« on: November 05, 2012, 11:42:58 PM »
Hi fellas. I'm Ed and my boys just recently moved from here in Tennessee to Lacey, WA this October. Their step dad is military and got stationed at Lewis. Well I have taken my boys ages 7, 8 and 9 out hunting and they want to continue to do so in WA. Step dad might want to hunt some but judging from previous attempts I'm really looking for someone that knows how to teach kids. We have deer, squirrel, duck and turkey hunted here and have had some success but none of them has been able to bag one yet. They have been with me when I have so they know how it goes. Really only the older boys are hunters. The youngest is the shy sensitive one and doesn't like the physical work involved. They both have shotguns that fit them and one has a slug barrel so they can deer hunt. I will work on getting them a suitable rifle if need be. Shots there seem to be a lot longer than here in TN.

Next year I will be more up on the regs and quotas hunts and such so I know what to tell mom to put them in for. For now I would just like to get them out and having fun. They would very happy just accompanying someone to the deer stand or duck blind but of course they want to shoot and eat what they get if possible.

So, if you live near Lacey or can host a boy or two and possibly Mom or Dad to chaperone that would be fantastic. Please get in touch with me and I will forward to them contact info.

As incentive if you wish to do some deer hunting in TN or KY I know of several spots that I can put you on that have good populations of deer. Hope we can get these kids hunting soon!

Thanks for reading.

I'm disappointed no one has offered to help. Would but I'm far off.

:yeah: I would but I am also a ways away from Lacey, and am still a newb hunter myself.  :(

Here is a bump though in the hopes it will get some notice and a response from an experienced hunter near your kids.

Have they taken hunters ed? Its a little late for deer, but I'd be willing to put em on some rabbits and grouse this winter. I don't screw around when it comes to safety so I'd expect they can safely handle a firearm.

Have they taken hunters ed?
If they haven't taken it, have them do so then repost. They probably wont get out till next year.

I know of someone who I met a couple years ago and I felt he was very wise when it comes to hunting. I cant tell you much about him but I can tell you he lives in Lacey . His nickname is Muskrat and you can find him on www.blacktailcountry.com  maybe just send him a message, get to know him first; whatever then tell him your concern and see if he would help out.

Thanks for replying guys and gals. The boys have not yet taken the hunters safety because here in TN they have to be 9 to take it. Only one boy, Sean, met the requirement this year but they were in the process of moving. I own a copy of one of the states safety courses and the boys have watched it about 6 times apiece. The older boys will be geared up to take the class as soon as they can I'm sure. I will take the time to reply to everybody individually. Also I will post up some pics and keep a look out in the youth section for the progress on their development.  Pictures of past outings are to follow this weekend.  Thank you everyone.

This is introduce the boys. First is Sean. He's my sons brother but not my son. I treat his as equally as I do my own though. He is going to be 10 in December. He is showing off his coot that only too about a box of shells to to bag!

Next up is my son James, age 8. He's a turkey hunting fool and probably a bit more of a natural hunter than Sean. He has been with me taking both deer and turkey and has had close encounters with both but has not yet pulled the trigger on one yet.

Last is Scott. He's the youngest and although he probably won't hunt he does like the outdoors and is a pretty good fisherman. All of them love fishing when the bite is on.

Man, those are some nice crappie.

As mentioned get them into Hunter Safety class as soon as you can.  Hopefully they will post a schedule on www.wdfw.wa.gov in the next month or so.  Click on the hunting tab and then look on the left for the Hunter Education tab.
