Black Powder verses Triple Seven and Pyrodex
« on: November 12, 2012, 07:32:08 AM »
Hey Ya'll,

Started out shooting pyrodex because...that's what they had.  Found it to be smelly and made my firing pin sticky after a couple shots.

Switched to Triple 7 after reading some posts here.  Noticed that the container recommended a felt wad  for "better performance."  And someone here said 777 burns hot and can melt the base of the bullet. No felt wads at Sportsmans, or Fishermans.

So I check Track of the Wolf . com.  They have real gunpowder. :o   Anyone here use Goex or Swiss black powder?  Is there a benefit?

Are you shooting flat based lead conicals? If you are the wad does add a bit of protection but are not absolutely necessary esecially if you are just hunting.  If you are shooting a sabot you do not need a wad at all.  I shoot &T7-2f in inlines with 209 ignition and I shoot T7-3f in all of my cap guns either inline or sidehammer.

Other thoughts - T7 is a less (I want to a lot less) - corrosive than either Real Black Powder or any of the Pyros.

Swiss the the best Real Black Powder, equal in power to T7, GOEX is a very good BP - I use to use it all the time shooting PRB's in Rondy shoots.  But I have switched to T7 for that also.  Remember T7 creates about 15% more powder grain for grain (by volumn) than do the Pyros or real BP - except Swiss.
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!

I shoot Goex BP in my Lyman's.  Both are .54 caliber and they shoot FFF very nicely.  I shoot Goex BP in FF for my 12 gauge ML during turkey season.  I've tried all the rest and BP shoots great in my gun.  Just as long as I throw the cleaning patches in a ziplock and put them in the outside garbage the wife never knows I cleaned it in the house...lol..
