Pulling Elk out with Chainsaw wench.... Question
« on: November 15, 2012, 09:16:35 AM »
Looking to get your opinion on what you have used for a backer board When pulling an elk out of a steep clear cut Whole with a chainsaw wench or pulling up to a road with rope and pulleys...

I've see guys use a wood toboggan type sled or a long flat 1" oak peice of wood with holes drilled on the edges to tie the animal too.

I've also seen the Coastal guys pull and elk out of an open cut with 1/2 mile of rope and thier trucks...

I guess if we drag the elk on a gravel road or up a rocky slope, I don't want the gravel or rock to become inbedded into the elk...

Just looking for your prospective...

Thanks!

Plastic Kiddy sled has worked good. Cheap too.

Never used anything.  They got some pretty thick hide,  I have never seen one get torn open from rocks or sticks.

I've drug them with an ATV.  They'll lose a lot of hair, but the hide is really tough.  I doubt with a winch you are going to tear the hide.

Now a WENCH (especially with a chainsaw) could be a whole different matter.  How big and how mean of a wench is she 8)?

Our camp has a 80mm or 100mm HDPE sled. It works great and we have pulled out multiple elk and even a moose with it.

I pull them out with a pulley strapped to a tree and 600' feet of rope tied to my truck. I keep the rope on a spool and take it with me in the truck. Quick and easy.

we use a capstan winch and several hundred feet of rope.  pulled them with nothing, tarps, and cabela's deer sleigh'er.  the deer sleigh'er is nice because you can wrap them securely and pull from the back legs so there is less chance of snagging antlers or noses.  pulling from the head is best if not using anything to wrap them so the hair isn't rubbed off, but you need to monitor them more for hangups.

Good info. For the record we pulled my brothers cow out with rope pulleys and his truck. We drug the animal on the gravel road and when we started skinning her out there was gravel and dirt that got through the hide and buried about 1/2" into the shoulder.

My buddy and I attempted to haul my spike out on a game cart whole last year out of the hell hole I shot him in.

That was a learning experience  :chuckle:

I don't own the game cart anymore.

LOL, we only pull it to the road and skin it there.

Ruttin- We had some leftover HDPE from work and came up with a design that works fairly well. We have talked about making a couple to see if people would be interested in them but we havent pursued it.

90% of the elk come up the hill to a road whole around here.  Block and cable.

Nothing is put under the animal.
