yote hunt yesterday

Went out with my bud nick out in lomont which is near sprague. We just went looking for public land out there but forgot where it was. Driving we spotted a herd of mullies running around, when we looked closer there was a yote following them or atleast in the same place they were. We stopped the car got the rifle and took a shot. He was running and we shot just a little off and miswed him, and watch the dust fly up where the bullet landed. We kept on the road since it was someones land looking for him but he, of course, was gone.
We headed back to try a different road we thought the public land was on and we s aw a farmer fixing his fence on the side of the road. We stopped and asked if he knew anyone who wanted to get rid of some coyotes. Him being a rancher who is soon to be dropping calfs allowed of to hunt on his land (which was awesome, never hurts to ask). We went onto one of his pastures and climbed on this big bluff. I had my rabbit call and my jonny stewart coyote call and did my best on what I thought the sound of yotes would be like yips and barks, along with what I thought a dying rabbit sounded like. Being impatient my confidence on my calling was dropping and I was always unsure.
Maybe ten minutes later we saw (with our 180 degree view) four different coyotes dialed into our bluff coming straight at us. With nick shooting while I called we dropped one and then tried to get another shot at another, which we did and was unsure if we got him. Once we went down and checked we missed him
Over all we got a lot of activity and im super proud and confident that I know how to call in dogs without an electronic caller. We said thank you to the rancher he gave us some beers and we chatted a bit and now we got permission to hunt there again. Great day!!!!

Try north of Sprague and I90 on 231.  Came back from deer hunting that way, and there was a lot of area that was just Sage there.  Don't know if it's public or private, but it looked like good coyote territory.

That's WAY south of where you live!  And WAY east of where I live.  Don't figure there's much competition there...

haha. well thanks. i get worried sometimes that im going to be somewhere calling in because it looks like a good spot, but there is no animals around at all, and ill be wasting my time.

Thanks for making the rest of us look like a bunch of trespassing trigger happy fools. You see a coyote or any animal that you want to hunt, find out who the land owners is and ask permission. Most of the land owners will probably say OKAY. But to just be there driving around shooting at animals is not what we are about so pull your fricken head out of your ass and do it right next time. I hunt for several ranchers around my area and the one thing that really pisses them off is poachers and wreckless *censored*s that shoot onto their property without permission. You would also be surprised at how many farmers don't want coyotes killed as they believe the coyotes  help control the rodent problems they deal with year after year.

Should have read the post closer, I guess.  Lost count of the number of shots I've passed on because the critter was standing on somebody's property thumbing his nose at me.

That is exactly why the private land in my area is so hard to get on.  You should've heard the --- chewing two idiots got 10 days ago for shooting from the State highway onto my ground standing right next to a sign.  Then they swore they didn't see any signs.  (There was 3 in rock throwing distance.)  Takes all kinds I guess.

When you find yourself in a hole, first thing to do is stop digging, what you just described there is illegal.  There is tons of BLM land just west of you and you won't have to worry about who's land your on, plenty of yotes and you won't have to resort to illegal stuff.

While there are exceptions, shooting from the road is generally illegal.   If it was WDFW land, and as you say, you were in the clear if you had got it, who is it your were you trying to call then?  And shooting onto property before or while you say you were trying to get permission is just a lame sounding excuse.     

Generally speaking, once your foot is in your mouth, it is best to not continue chewing up to your knee.   Make sure you know where you are, have permission BEFORE doing any hunting or shooting, and make sure you are legally and safely off the road and then have fun. 

Don't be impatient and do dumb things that make it harder for the next person who is careful and respectful that may come along behind you.

Prime example of why road hunters are despised especially in my area. Yes there is an awful lot of BLM, DNR, USFS and WDFW property but folks don't find where one ends and the other begins so they just hunt it all

Too many assumptions when a guy says road its automatically illegal? There are plenty of legal shoots from what can be called roads, forest rds, field rds, etc. then he said legal shoot so lets trust our fellow sportsman and if he was in the wrong just forgive him because all this internet yelling is getting old.
