Is anyone familiar with Deer Area 6020?
« on: November 19, 2012, 02:48:04 PM »
Is anyone familiar with deer area 6020, north of the 101 between Port Angeles and Miller Peninsula? I'm assuming its mostly private land, but I was wondering if there is any public land up there worth checking out for next season. I spent the majority of the general season trying to get my brother a shot at a buck, but since doe harvest is allowed up there I considered giving it a try for him. Throughout the entire general and late season we only saw one buck, a spike a couple days after the general season ended. After hunting almost every day of the general and late season he ended up taking a small buck on private land, but I ate my tag.

On a side note, are there elk on the Coyle? We hunted primarily the Pope lands east of Coyle road and while we were out I spotted what looked to be elk droppings. I've seen enough elk and deer droppings to know the difference but I didn't think that they would be out there. Each turd was oval shaped and about 1.5 inches long. Pretty big piles too. At first I thought maybe it was from a big deer but after seeing deer sign in the same area all day, it was obvious that they weren't the same. Didn't have a camera with me at the time. Maybe those of you familiar with GMU 621 and 624 can chime in. Thanks.

It is mostly private.  There are some big farm fields in 6020 and a WDFW plot for waterfowl by the dungeness river (could check on deer) as well as county park (the county park allows bird hunting and I've heard deer but haven't got a clear answer).

As for elk in 624, I've heard that there are occasionally bulls that wander around over there.  I don't know of any resident or migratory herds that live in that section.  So the bulls may be hard to pattern.

Its really tough to hunt here as almost all the land is private aside from a couple county parks you cannot hunt deer in anyhow, its also a firearms restricted area so basically shotguns, muzzleloaders and archery are allowed. seasons call for any deer except for archery late season is any buck, I don't hear much about deer being killed here too often and don't see too many unless you go to the residential areas where there are bunches of homes the deer hand out there all year !!

Good Luck, its a tough one but doable with persistence if you don't mind getting yelled at by neighbors !!

Yes, there ARE elk on the coyle. Down by Silent Lake. I live in 624. Seen a few in Chimacum as well. The elk in the Coyle are few and far inbetween. VERY VERY hard to find, but they are there.
