Stupid Poachers
« on: November 25, 2012, 10:43:54 AM »
Some idiot has been shooting turkeys near my place with a pellet gun.  Both of my boys got their Fall birds this morning, one of them had a pellet in the breast, the other had two pellets in the thigh and back.  This really chafes me.  A call to F&W is in order.  These birds have been on my place every day all summer and I've watched them show up with injuries along with the flocks gradually shrinking.  I thought it was predation, but now I suspect it was one of my neighbors.

Why would that make any difference?  Still needs to be stopped.

No kidding, pellet gun and turkeys today, .22/.243 tomorrow and deer and elk.

I have always found it amazing that any hunting parents let their kids shoot songbirds with bb/pellet guns (not counting house sparows and starlings) since this, to me, shows a disrespect to wildlife that may continue on to larger things.

I can assure you that this would not be his kids, they get ample chance to harvest turkeys.
My point is that if they wanted to shoot a turkey all they would have to do is tell dad that they want to go hunting for them.

I have a fealing someone doesn't like turkeys in their garden or flower beds. Sounds more like someone trying to haze them then kill them.

I can not agree more lokidog... my dad used to plant more than we actually needed in the garden.. knowing full well, birds (robins, blackbirds, etc...) would get their share...
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was some kid, but none of my neighbors for some distance have kids.  I've got the only bunch on the hill.  The pellets I pulled out of these birds aren't a type I've ever purchased, so I'm sure they aren't from my house.  One of my neighbors has complained quite a bit about the turkeys.  I can understand the frustration with having a flock of turkeys in your yard every day, they crap like geese.  However, if you buy some acreage in the woods, wildlife comes with it.  Taking pot shots at them to chase them off is wrong.  I'm not against protecting your prize petunias, but shooting wildlife goes too far.

Heck, I kill every gopher that gets into my garden, but they sure aren't a game species that occasionally wanders into my yard.

I don't care if it is a neighbor who is tired of them, a silent poacher, or a rotten kid.  Shooting turkeys with a pellet gun is just plain wrong.

I shot a nice blacktail a few years back and as I was cutting it up I had 6 pointed pellets I cut out of it.  It must have had a liking for someones garden and got shot everytime it came in.

What's the matter with kids shooting birds?  My dad used to pay me to keep them out of the fruit trees and garden.  I used to pile up the starlings and crows.  I am sure he would have had me chase the turkeys off as well with the pellet gun.  But that was also 30 years ago.  When people didn't want to hug every animal they saw.

I could be mistaken, but I don't think that ORCA SIX is saying "his" kids, but "some" kids  :dunno:
