White tail muzzy hunt starts this week
« on: November 25, 2012, 08:39:10 PM »
Hunting crop circles for 3+ white tail.
Deer are hiding in standing corn, so rattling and calling is the what I will be doing.
It may be a little wet. Hopefully, the deer can hear the calls at a distance.

Good luck, be ready for some quick shots if calling!

Maybe pick up some doe scent since you're well into the rut season.  Rattling isn't as productive as early November.  Not saying it doesn't work at all but you might want to augment it with estrous scent.  Good luck
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

I headed for the sage brush along a river. I started calling. It did not look like I had picked a good spot, so I rotated 90 degrees and walked to the side of a dune. About 400 yards distant, I saw a herd of deer. I figured there was a buck in the group. I stared at them for a while and starting moving in their direction. I kept calling. Suddenly off to my right, I saw movement. It was a buck that had come from nowhere and now was standing on top of a dune. I had stuff in my hands and started dropping them. I slowly raised the muzzleloader, took off the safety, unscrewed the bolt to firing position, put it to the shoulder. The buck now was facing me straight on at about 100 yards, more or less. I looked through the peep sight and aimed at the chest. This was an unplanned off hand shot. I pulled the trigger, the buck turned and ran off.
I gathered my things and walked his direction. It looked like I had missed. I had only shot off hand once before in 50 years.
I topped the sand dune and was looking around when I noticed something. I walked over and there was my 4x4 whitetail buck.
I had hit him right where I had aimed. After processing, I started the long drag. I found out then that dragging through sand and sage brush was no easy task. After a LOT of effort I reached a road. It was pitch black now and my flashlight was not to be found. I headed for the truck. I drove over to where I thought the buck was, (I had left the deer just off the road edge). After some careful staring at the side of the road, I recognized the barrel of the ml lying on a bush. I backed the truck up, lowered the tailgate and dragged the deer onto the truck bed. Closed the gate and I was off.

Ah, what I did was drag him to a bank, back up the truck, lower the tail gate and drag him in. No lifting.

Well, I must have been really pumped. I returned to where I was standing when I shot the deer. I had a laser range finder and it told me I shot 152 yards.
I took several measurements and they all were in that range. Looks like I can not judge distances in the sage brush.
I thought it was about 100 yards.
I did see lots of white-tail does and they were from 240 yards to 315 yards.
