Here some less than common ducks that I personally have been asked what they were....(not my pics)
Eurasian widgeon then pinlard (a hybrid between a pintail and mallard)

Gad's are always a tough one for newbies to ID while flying.  I always pick up the dark color and white in the wings first.  Then the bill shape.
