Knight bighorn secondary safety
« on: December 01, 2012, 08:23:01 AM »
I have a older knight bighorn .50 caliber and the secondary safety will still let my hammer hit the cap even if it is screwed to the safe position. I also noticed that my hammer assembly is a little different than my buddy's. mine has a rounded, almost pointed face where it strikes the nipple, his is flat faced. My gun was set up for 209 when I bought it.
My gun goes off every time, but I don't like the fact that the secondary safety is there but does not work. My question is this.. Is there certain hammer for 209 and certain ones for musket caps? I called knight and the gal I talked to was about as helpful as a rotten log, she could not grasp my question at all.

My knight BH has the pointed hammer.  I have the musket nipples and my secondary safety does hold it off the cap.  I did not get any different hammer with my rifle, and it came with the 209 setup in a bag.

You do have a 209 hammer or universal hammer installed in your rifle.  You might be able to get a flat cap hammer from Knight.  There should not be a difference in length.

I wonder if the secondary safety is actually screwing all the way in.  Pull the hammer back to full cocked position.  There should be a red line around the threaded portion. Screw the secondary safety in all the way it should come close to covering the red line when it is is all the way in.

My suggestion call Knight and ask for technical service.. Gordy should get back to you.  I am Kennewick today when I get back to Moscow I will get some pictures pictures... for you.

Another thing you can do is pull the hammer assembly from the reciever and screw the secondary in as far as it will go. Graps the hammer in your hand to hold it will compressing the hammer spring.

Get it fixed!  I have the disc extreme and the safety selector switch has on several occasions been unintentionally moved into the fire position when strapped to the outside of my pack when root through the wilderness.  Not worth an AD!

Was looking at mine, and cannot see any reason there could be a problem with the hammer assy.

Have you ever changed the breech plug?  Maybe there is carbon buildup where the breechplug "bottoms out", so it is not being fully screwed in?

Looking straight down to the action of my rifle, I cannot see the end of the breechplug, just the nipple.  Does the end of your breechplug show at all?

You wouldn't have to cut it off, the whole thing comes apart. As far as it still hitting the primer it sounds like you have taken it apart before and put it in backwards. Throw up some pics of the bolt section so we can see how you have it assembled. :twocents:

in my opinion that is the only flaw with the knight is the secondary safety.  It screwed me once last season and again this year.  I ended up putting lock tight on it and no longer moves with ease.

I screwed the saftey all the way back, glued it. Then I wrapped it in electrical tape.
It will never get me again!  :chuckle:

Just a thought... what I do is apply liquid teflon to the threads.  The thick teflon keeps it from vibrating forward while shooting.

I use a NAPA product called Thread Sealant with Teflon Item# 765-1188

Was just looking at my bighorn hammer assy.  I don't see any way the hammer could change to dissable the secondary safety.

Have you ever changed the breechplug?  Any carbon preventing the breechplug from screwing in all the way?

When looking straight down at the action of my BH, I cannot see the rear of the breechplug (just barely hidden) when it is installed.  The nipple is all that shows

My BH came with 3 breechplugs, but only 1 has threads for nipples for #11 or musket nipples.

You are using standard nipples?

I'm with some of the others. I think your issue is in the breach plug area. It sounds like your nipple is set too far back toward the hammer.

I have the pointed hammer on mine. The screw knob on the back of the hammer will hold it off the nipple maybe half an inch or so. The screw knob only has to be frowad a thread or so to stop the hammer from hitting the nipple.

I take mine apart all the time. I remove the allen screw in the back of the hammer so I can remove the thumb screw and remove the big thumb screw and clean the spring and where the spring recesses into the big thumb screw.

Maybe if you put the small thumb screw on backwards it would cause your issue. Not sure, I havent tried that. But the small thumb screw has the threads recessed in on one side and not the other, so maybe....... The knurled section of the thumb screw goes to the rear, and the smooth part to the front.

I'd take your bolt(hammer) apart and make sure its together correctly. Then I'd address the breach plug if the problem persists.

My Dad missed an oppotunity on a spike bull fiddling with that second saftey.... I disabled it for him after that..... Screw it all the way back with some thread lock on it... Let dry... Super glue should do the trick to..

You guys dont need to do all that locktite, super glue, tape stuff to lock it back. You can just loosen the allen screw in the back that keeps it from falling off, then screw it back a touch, and then tighten the allen screw down to lock it in place like a normal lock nut would do.

All I do is grab across the hammer with my thumb, grabbing around the entire rifle with my thumb in the reciever opening across the hammer keeping it from turning. I then screw the safety back hard against the retainer allen screw. Never had it move from that position while hunting.

Ok, I went out yesterday and tried shooting my gun with the secondary safety screwed to the "safe" position. The gun fired!  Is it possible that the breech plug may be too long in length? Do breech plugs come in different  lengths? There was no crud in the threads to keep it fron screwing all the way in.
I did unscrew the secondary safety screw and try to adjust it, nothing changed. I'm calling knight later on and going to try and get this figured out.

A couple thoughts would be that besides a possible secondary safety problem or something wrong with the plunger assembly, the primer could be 'farther out' than desired by either: 1) the wrong nipple installed or 2) the breech plug is wrong/not screwed in all the way

My breech plug measures 1.37 inches long.  That does not include the nipple.  Both musket and 11 nipples look to be the same length

Mine came with 3 plugs, but 2 are for the 209 primers
