What wool pants?
« on: December 05, 2012, 09:56:48 AM »
Looking for a new pair of mid weight wool pants and am curious who has what. I Have Columbia, looking for a ill lighter.  I've looked at filson and like whipcords but would really like cargo pockets, mackinaw's aren't camo, but may work.  Thanks in advance!

Try Big Bill brand.  I have used them for 4 seasons now and they have held up really well.

Yep- I wear them all winter up here.  They are pretty good pants for the money.  I wore a hole in the last pair after about 6 weeks and cabelas replaced them...so that was nice.

The Filsons are great pants.  I think you can get them with small cargo pockets.  Mine don't have any.  They will last foreever.

I've had a bunch of military surplus wool pants over the years that worked great.  Right now I have a pair that were from the Canadian army.  I got these at Ed's surplus in Lynnwood, don't know if the store is even there any more.  They were about $20.  I can't find them any more but if you come across a pair of the German ones with the double knees, grab them, they are great.

I like mil surp too.  I haven't found cargo pockets on them though.  I have been thinking of sewing some on but I imagine it wouldn't look real good.   :chuckle:

I wear Woolrich bibs with no long johns in upper 30's temp to high 40's, then put mid weight polypropolyne long john's on for colder temps. Went snowshoeing in a blizzard on MT Baker last January that way plent warm, of course I looked like the abominal snowman with snow dingle berries hanging off them.  :IBCOOL:

I love everything Filson...but way too expensive.

For wool pants, I love my Army Surplus Swedish (cargo pockets, ankle buckels) wool pants.  You can pick up great quality, and they are so cheap, you can buy a new pair every other year.

Ed's is still in business FYI, I stopped by there today. Great little shop, they have various wool military pants in various sizes. Love that store, been goin there since I was a little kid

I have some "non-military" wool pants too but I usually leave them at home in favor of the military surplus ones that cost 25% as much.

Call Filson wool and ask about their DOD contract military.
If your familiar with the "newer" military type uniform with pocket placement, these are the exact same layout.
GREAT woolies.... None of that light weight old school stuff....

I think they run $150 ish for tops and bottoms...

The top has reinforced elbows, and a wind liner inside... All I wear when it is wet and cold (a lot here).
