Chiwawa Late Archery
« on: December 07, 2012, 01:19:05 AM »
We hunted for 3 days in this unit and we were able to harvest 3 bucks.  The snow was crunchy and loud and made our stalks almost impossible.  I was able to sneak into bow range on this buck as he was pushing all ten of his does.  I did hit him further back then I wanted to but we were able to keep our eyes on him and watch him bed and finally expire.  On day three my buddy shot a 3 by 4 with eyeguards which we had seen in the same spot everyday but he would bed in the snow line but on day three he bedded where there was no snow and we were able to get into bow range and he put a good shot on this buck.  The bloodtrail was massive and one of the most graphic i have seen.  Needless to say my buddy was pumped.  On the evening of the third day our other buddy shot his first mulie with a 40 yard shot and the small 3pt went 15 yards and was done.  I wanna thanks deerdog and Radsav for all their help with this hunt.  The heads performed great and deerdog thanks for coming up there with us and giving us all the info.  Two the Cashmere guys who helped pack out my buck thanks guys, one was a huntwa member and I never did get his user name.

Pic but no story!  You are a Hunting-Washington rebel :chuckle:  Much nicer than a thread about my grandfathers neighbors friend who shot a huge archery buck that may or may not be a record, but I haven't got permission to post a pic yet.  But we need details man!  Give us a story.

You have to at least tell everyone how that awesome RADSAV dude set you up to take the 9th and 10th big game animals ever taken with that sweet, nasty, tremedously deadly, super sharp, C 1095 carbon bladed, titanium Savora prototype  :IBCOOL:

All kidding aside.  I'm super excited for you.  That is a great buck!  I'm also pleased that your friend Doug was able to get such a nice buck for his first archery mule deer.  Great job guys
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Well There was not much rut activity going on when we were over there.  We saw a couple bucks pushing some does around but most of the bucks were were up high and hanging with other bucks.  While my buddy was doing his little potty break I  spotted two bucks in a bowl at the bottom of the mountain it seemed.  We started our way towards the bucks when we came around the bend to see my buck pushing 10 does around.  There was no snow where he was running around and that helped us get in a little closer to him.  The does were starting to feed up the mountain and we were running out of cover and one of the does stayed behind and when he came down to push her up he was in my range.  I ranged him and let the arrow go.  It hit him back and blew through and he bolted down the hill and after about 75 yards he slowed up and just slowly walked around the ridge.  We get around that ridge and we were able to watch him bed and finally expire.  It was hard on me watching this buck slowly expire but where he bedded was wide open and I didnt want to risk pushing him and taking a chance on not recovering this buck.  For being a gut shot he sure did bleed well.  Thanks RadSav and oh yeah the heads were great except for the two that Dougie put into the Rocks  :chuckle:  Their was nothing left of the arrow or the Broadhead.

Ok!  You're off the hook. ;)  I did not know you guys got three bucks!  Thanks for the story.

Like I said to you earlier...Sometimes poor shot placement does more to test a products performance than a perfect heart shot.  It never feels good to do it, but you did the right thing, made the right moves and have one heck of a trophy to show for it.

Now shooting rocks with $100.00 titanium prototypes is just wrong :yike:  That's usually the kind of testing specially reserved for BattleReady and myself :chuckle:  We are the experts...at killing rocks...don't you know?  Makes me :ACRY: just thinking about it.  Sometimes though you just have to pay homage to the bowhunting gods.  Though I usually bury some Doritos and a dollar bill.  Titanium  :dunno:

In testing these heads we found out some interesting stuff.  One of the most interesting was how hard it is on an arrow when the ferrule is as strong as the titanium is.  I have not blown out the sides of an insert in about 20 years.  That was back when we used the half-out inserts with the 3-39 A/C/C.  Both BattleReady and I are shooting the super tough Carbon Express KV shafts with special brass inserts.  Both of us killed a few rocks with them shooting pack rats and other vermin.  If we did not split the rocks in half we'd blow out the side of the inserts and snap the titanium ferrules at the threads.  Aluminum ferrules must dampen the blow a bit as we have never done that to these arrows and inserts while using aluminum ferrules.  Though I have never cut rocks in half like we did with the titanium.  It's hard on arrows but pretty cool stuff!

When the production stuff is complete I'll get you guys down here for some sheep and antelope BBQ.  I'll swap the remaining prototypes out for production stuff or one of the three other prototypes if you wish to do some further testing.  You guys sure did a great job!  Wish I could have been there with you.

Congrats on your bucks. I had 3 friends go over there and each got his buck. But they spend a week plus camping over there in wall tents and pretty much having a good time. If an archery hunter wants a buck thats pretty much the place to go.
