What to do with hides?
« on: December 18, 2012, 09:52:42 AM »
So dumb question, I am new to hunting in WA state and was curious what you guys do with your hides from your animals once the season is over? In Montana we could take them to a local recycle center and they had them all turned into gloves, but not sure what to do here. I have contacted a few Taxidermists, however they are usually interested in much higher quality hides than what I may possess. Any idea's? Happy holidays.

Some taxis will take hides and give a pair of gloves.  There's one down in the Rochester area, but a long way to go.  You could contact Michelle's Taxidermy as I can't remember the name of the guy.  It was nice when Quilceda was in Marysville, but they do not do it any more.

That would be neat. I would gladly trade a hide I'm gonna throw away for a pair of gloves!

The gloves is the same way they did it in Montana, 1 pair for a deer/smaller game and 2 pair for an elk/larger game. It was actually really nice since the gloves were rather good quality made from the same hides everyone turned in. Appreciate the feedback I will conduct more research. Not sure on the legality of just recycling them back into the woods maybe someone could speak to that?

Nothing wrong with returning the hide/carcass to the woods, just don't hunt for bear over it.  And, please dispose of it where non-hunters will NOT easily see it.

Give them to me is an option

I'll take them if they're not slipping.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

I have had a couple blacktail hides tanned hair on for backups.

Anyone have elk or deer rugs made with them before? Certainly not as cool as a bear rug but might be a cool addition to the man cave? :dunno:

Yep, hang it in the tree so they have to stretch for it...then get them in the throat.

I brain tan mine, Soften it in a frame, and smoke it for color. That my friend is real buckskin.
If we were supposed to be vegetarian God would have made broccoli more fun to shoot!
"HOYT" why would you even consider shooting something else?

Did anyone ever find anything out on trading a hide for a pair of gloves?

Most may not care but if you want an adventure brain tan your hide. Here are a few pics of some I have done. The big one is a big buck, the smaller buck has neat scars all down his back. I am sure they were from barbed wire. The small one is a small doe that wasn't smoked for color. Hence the hide is white. Enjoy the pics.
