Which AR to buy?
« on: December 20, 2012, 10:52:52 AM »
If you had the money, and home front approval, would you get a .223 because of cheaper and more available ammo, or a 6.8spc so it could be used for deer hunting?  I reload so that would reduce the cost of 6.8 rounds.

Well I think at this point you may be hard pressed to find one to begin with.  At least from what I have heard most places are pretty well sold out except for the high end ones.

What about the 6.5 Grendel?  I would think either it or the 6.8 would be more than adequate for deer hunting.

I just bought a SW MP AR15-22 so I could shoot cheap.

I would opt for the 6.5.

I have a line on a 6.8 spc., the cartridge seems to get good reviews.

Hmmm, I guess it depends then on how bad you want to be able to use if for deer hunting?  The 6.8 is a nice shooting cartridge, recoil isn't bad at all and I wouldn't hestitate at all to use it at 250-300 yards if you have a good optic.

Silver State Armory puts out 6.8 ammo.  I don't know how prices compare between 6.8 and 5.56.  What kind of rifle?

I have a barrel on order for one of these actually.  Have heard lots of good things about it.

If the price is right for you I'd buy it.   :twocents:

Get whichever you want most at the moment.  Then get an Upper for the other, down the road after the panic buying eases off...   or even just the barrel...
By my honorable conduct as a hunter let me give a good example and teach new hunters principles of honor, so that each new generation can show respect for their god, other hunters and the animals, and enjoy the dignity of the hunt.

Calling an illegal alien an 'undocumented immigrant' is like calling a drug dealer an 'unlicensed pharmacist'.

The grendel stomps all over the 6.8. If you are wanting one for hunting big game I would say 100% grendel

I wouldn't worry about it to much right now.  I don't think you can find an AR anywhere unless you want to pay over $3k.
Cut em!

Easy to say, but not the one I have available.

Thanks all, decisions have been made.   :chuckle:   8)
