My boys first (bull) cow elk.
« on: December 21, 2012, 09:51:42 AM »
My boy was drawn for the damage control hunt for the Sequim herd. Monday nite we got the call for him to have a chance of chasing some elk. Got up early Tuesday morning and headed out to the meeting place with two master hunters who would help in getting my boy a bull. Master hunter Jerry and Jack pulled up and gave us a run down on what was in store for today. Showed us where they saw the herd last and we began to glass the area. We found the herd bedded down 1000 yards or so away. They were making there way up into the timber so the plan was made. Jerry would take my boy and drive to a closer road and walk in. Jack and I would stay put and watch the action.
40 minutes later I could see my boy moving up a old road about 150 yards from the herd. There were only 2 spikes left in the herd so getting a good shot was going to be hard to wait for a clear shot. I was glassing my boy and saw Jerry place the shooting sticks up and my boy prepare to shoot. Boom elk down. Herd takes off and one elk down not moving. I call my Uncle and father in-law to bring truck and trailer. Well elk comes to life (3minutes of not moving) Gets up and runs away. Jack who is with me says he shot a cow. I thought what the heck. Now dad is freaking out and thinking what the heck we do now. The boy has a bull tag.
We start tracking the elk and we set my boy up and begin pushing through the timber. I jump the cow and push her to where my boy was set up. The elk was hit high and little to far back. I radioed to Jack and Jerry I am pushing the elk out to them. 5minutes later Boom. Elk is down. While walking to the elk I am trying to figure out what we are going to do about shooting a cow. I walk up to my boy and he has a big smile and gave dad a big hug and dad is thinking you shot a cow. I took my boy aside and asked why he shot a cow. Well I was not told doing the morning briefing that no kids have been able to hunt in this unit because of (politics). Jerry who loves taking the kids out for this hunt called the state and got some cow tags. So dad was able to relax and enjoy the rest of the day and enjoy a great morning of hunting with the boy and two very nice master hunters Jerry and Jack. Big Thank you to Jerry and Jack for there time and patience in this hunt.

first things first congrats on the elk i love to see the youth have a successful hunt my nephew drew this same tag did not receive a call my brother called the hunt guide and was told only one kid got called the frustrating part is that he had 5 elk points the hunt guide killed a bull before any kids got to hunt in the past almost all the kids got to hunt bummer for the kids that drew a tag thinking they would get to hunt and wasted elk points for nothing
