Which Jetboil stove?
« on: December 25, 2012, 06:34:20 PM »
Push button ignition and the ability to boil enough water for a MH meal are my 2 requirements. There's multiple choices as far as they go. Curious to see which ones folks prefer.

Are you stuck on a Jet Boil?  If not take a look at a pocket rocket with a Stoic Ti Kettle.  Much smaller and lighter and it will save you a few bucks too.  It doesn't have a built in ignition though.

Or the Optimus for 89 bucks. Works great. Compact, light, and haven't had a problem with it yet. Boils water fast and fuel lasts a long time.  :twocents:

The Flash for me, but have a friend that owns the Sol. The Flash seems to boil water plenty fast enough for me, although in lower temps the Sol boiled water a little faster than my Flash.

I have a couple stoves along the line of the pocket rocket. I used them both this year a few times. I found they worked great up to about 7k feet. I spent 2 days using one at almost 10k and it took forrrrrrr ever to boil water. I used a ton of fuel. I'm thinking by trying the jetboil I might do a little better.

P.s. wind was not a huge factor. We were behind a wall.
I'm sure it was the elevation.(I think)

At higher elevations you are usually going to have lower barometric pressure also remember the initial water temp maybe very different which will effect the time to boil

I run the old regular one it  works great.

X2

I have about five backpack type stoves and I use this one most of the time.  Unless I fly somewhere then I take a white gas stove since most guide outfits and outfitters have that fuel when I land.  I do think the white gas works a little better above 7,000'.

Got one of the smaller versions last year.  Not enough weight savings to make the difference I was hoping for.  Took two pots to make a MH meal so quicker boiling time did not really save me anything either.  Great for a cup-o-noodles on the go or a hot mountain mocha while glassing.  But I like the original much better.

Used the big Jetboil camp pot with the white gas on my last goat hunt.  Set-up was a bit funky trying to make it work.  But once I figured that out it was a great combination.  Other than I find it difficult to maintain a simmer with the white fuel stoves that I have.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
