Which Jetboil stove?

I have a couple stoves along the line of the pocket rocket. I used them both this year a few times. I found they worked great up to about 7k feet. I spent 2 days using one at almost 10k and it took forrrrrrr ever to boil water. I used a ton of fuel. I'm thinking by trying the jetboil I might do a little better.

It's the altitude, I use a pocket rocket and my dad uses a similar model (forget who makes it).

we each took 1 fuel can for a 5 day trip at 7k-8k. he ran out on day 4 and then shared mine, it still had some left when we were done but not much. at lower elevations, say 5k, that same can would last me 2 or 3 trips.

The nice thing about the jetboil is how efficient they are .No other stoves compare.

The MSR Reactor stove will boil water faster. My friend was a big Jetboil fan until we did some side by side comparisons. He shelved his Jetboil and bought a Reactor.

I'm sure it's the altitude. The weird thing is water boils at a lower temp at altitude, yet it takes longer to get there. I was thinking that a more efficient stove would help that. Just wasn't sure if the jetboils were more efficient enough to make a difference.
In reality how much time am I going to spend above 7k and is it enough to justify spending $100+ on a stove when I already have a couple decent stoves.

The differences with Jetboil are any tagged as "Sol" have their new burner which is more efficient at altitude and/or colder temps. The other (Flash and Zip) are their older burner. I can still boil water although it takes a minute or two longer with the Flash in 25-30F temps.

I bought the Jetboil flash this year as my first stove.  I looked at a lot of other brands, but this seemed to be the best bang for the buck to include simplicity in packing everything inside itself.  I could have spent more money on the Sol Ti version another $149 vs $89.  It would save another 5.5 ounces of weight and another 15 seconds cook time.

we used 2 jet boil stoves between 3 guys and i tested just how many boils I could get out of 1 canister.  We got over 20 boils at 15-35 degree temps between 5000-6000 feet in elevation.  At this temp and elevation it took longer than the 2 min 30 seconds they proclaimed, but not much longer (maybe 3 - 4 minutes.)

I have been very  happy so far and have about 30 boils on it so far.

Hey Jackelope, I still have that "original" model Jetboil if you're interested...I think that you saw it once already and I haven't used it since.

I'm using a Jetboil SOL Ti now and/or a MSR Pocket Rocket with a Backcountry.com Ti cup.

I have the Jetboil SOL and it does anything I want it to do. I believe there is a second generation fuel designed for cold and higher altitude that is supposed to work better. It works great for the Mountain House meals and I did buy the coffee press but I have only used that one time. I carry it in my car when on trips with my emergency box so I can have a hot drink or meal if I break down or if I just want a hot cup of coffee. Light weight and a second larger canister of fuel weighs very little. Good luck.

I think you'd do better at 10,000' with a white gas stove than a butane mix.  I do like my Pocket rocket although I've never had it to 10,000'.  Last year I switched from an aluminum pot to the Snow Peak Ti Hybrid Trail cookset. The Ti seems to heat faster than the aluminum. The bowl comes in handy and I use the pan as a lid on the pot when boiling water, keeping the heat in so it boils faster. The combination is lighter than the Jeboil system too. The Jetboil does have a nice wind screen built in but I just use some aluminum foil.

I had the the above mentioned Pocket Rocket and Stoic Kettle (with lid) at 7-8k (Late October anywhere from 20-40 degrees) this year for 5 days with one can of fuel (small one, 4oz?).  I used it for a MH Breakfast and coffee in the a.m. and MH Dinner at night.  Sometimes I boiled it for both of us just so we didn't have to pull out two stoves.  I still had some fuel left at the end of the trip,  not much but still some left.

Having owned several backbacking stoves, I can honestly say that the Jetboil with the instant ignition has been with out a doubt the best all around stove I have ever used. Yes, some may boil quicker and be smaller, etc., however the Jetboil is bullet proof, always works great, and is perfect for easy set up, use, etc. With that said, I have never used mine above 5k foot elevation.

msr REACTOR IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO. they have a couple pot sizes and boils water in about 1 min give or take on altitude and ambient temp. we use them for big game and water fowl hunting. nothing like a nice warm Mt house in the blind.

I agree with this, I am still using my 1st jetboil that I bought in '05 after Backpacker magazine named it the "Best of the Year". The ignitor has quit working but the stove keeps going. I have used mine at 10k+ many times and it takes a lot more time, but it will get the water boiling.

I wonder if the Jetboil Ti pot heats more efficiently than the aluminum pot?   Does anyone use one at higher elevations?

Talk to DBHAWTHORN as he is very much so in the know on gear (rather he will admit it or not , his youngins always have the latest and greatest).... But i do recall a time when I was stomping around the high country as well, and seems as though they had special canisters for higher altitudes?   Been 6+ years ago, but if that don't work, like already mentioned, get a MSR stove. Some will burn ANYTHING flammable.
