Springfield XD Service or Sub Compact for Concealed Carry

I have decided on the Springfield XD in 9 mm as my new concealed carry. I am torn between the 4 inch service model and the 3 inch sub compact model. I realize the handle on the sub compact is smaller and can be made larger with the extended magazine. I have watched hours of reviews on YouTube about these two pistols. I am 5 foot 9 and 215 lbs. I am wondering if the slightly larger service model is easy to conceal in an in the waistband holster. Does anyone have any experience with these two versions? Thank you for the information in advance.

You should get the S$W M&P Compact instead, it has better grips, looks nicer, and in my opinion a far nicer gun for the same price.

Don't worry about concealing a 4 inch handgun.  I carry a S&W 1911SC e-series and I'm about an inch taller and 15 pounds lighter than you.  You'd never know I've got it on.  I use a galco king tuk, and my wife  can't tell I have it on.

Either with the right holster.
I carry the subcompact the most mainly because the holster is more forgiving, but would prefer the full size with the right leather.

I have the XD -40 Sub compact and it carries very nice with a Uncle Mikes holster.
  I would opt for the XD should you ever andI say should you.The service department
Is the best.   Trigger pull is nice on the XD

I would go with the 4" , chances are you will get a better grip with the slighly larger frame. Concealing it won't be a issue and odds are you will be able to shoot and control a 4" model a little better than the 3". Either handgun will will be fine for what your looking for.

I have both of these guns.  For carrying, the Springfield is chunkier width-wise.  I believe the sprinfield is a safer gun though.  The M&P relies only on a funky trigger for safety.  The Springfield has the funky trigger thing and a palm safety, AND it has a visible striker and the loaded chamber indicator.  I really like the way you know it is a. loaded and b. ready to fire, and a lot has to go wrong to accidentially discharge the springfield.  To answer your question, I would go with the sub-compact though.  That way if you don't want to use a holster, it will fit better in a jacket pocket.

I have both of these weapons as well (actually I have the 3.8 xdm)  The sub compact is easier to conceal in warmer months.  I'm 5'8" 205 and not chubby, so t shirts fit loosely at the bottom.  I generally had no problems concealing the 3.8, but i swear the sub compact is half the weight and size and barely noticeable after carrying the xdm for 2 years.

As for shooting, there is hardly any noticeable difference between the two.  Mine are both .40 and stay on target really well.

  you buy both and sell me the one you dont like.  they are both fine guns.  the mp is a bit more cost,  but it is personal taste and need.  i like the springfield a bit better.  mikew

The only other problem with the Springfield is that they insist on putting "made in Croatia" in a bunch of places on it, the magazine, the box etc.  I hate to be reminded that it isn't a US made gun.

the sub is definitely a little easier to conceal, they make the .45 xd with a 4" barrel and a grip thats a half inch shorter than the service model. that half inch doesnt seem like much, but my g23 is a half inch shorter grip than my xd service, and its a noticeable difference in carry.. if it's to be a carry gun, get the "compact" grip .45 or a sub..

  What hillbilli said the XD45 4 inch compact would be a good option because the grip is a little shorter than the full size XD9 or XD40. The sub compacts are another good option but it might depend on your hand size I found the XD9sc and XD40sc to be a little short on the grip and requiring a pinky extension if you use the compact mag. I also prefer a 4 in barrel over the 3 inch sc models. Good luck on your search
