My Baby...Sako TRG42 .338LM
« on: December 30, 2012, 10:12:42 PM »
Figured I'd show off my baby...picked it up in october and have only recently gotten a chance to start shooting it. topped with a nightforce nxs 5.5-22x56 with zero stop. just got it sighted in at 200yds and am going to start pushing the distance back real soon. plans are to get into some long range target shooting and potentially take some game at longer ranges once i feel comfortable doing so. muzzle brake, picitanny base, and the scope mount/rings were from near manufacturing in canada. the reviews were right on their stuff, quality is second to none, great people to work with...and that brake blows away the factory one. even fired off the shoulder it shoots nicely, very effective brake.

Very cool!

I have been considering the same rifle myself.

I figured for the price you get the best factory rifle in .338lm. all the others just seemed way to expensive when the trg could shoot just as well or close to. eurooptic.com is where i bought it from, they have the best prices i've seen.

I have dealt with them before. Are you running hand loads or factory ammo? I would love to see some groups if you get a chance.

Alex is a good guy with great prices usually, especially to repeat customers.  He used to offer a trust system, but was burned by too many ass hats.  Anyhow, what brand is the ring/base setup?  Near?

I've been dreaming of that rifle for about a year now.

Would love to have that baby and load up those 300 gr. Bergers. . . 0.818 BC!  :yike:

I'm jealous!

thanks guys! rings and 20moa base are Near Manufacturing. I'm just starting to work up some handloads for it now. using Federal 215m primers, Lapua brass, Vithavuori N570 powder, and Lapua Scenar 300gr bullets. I've only tried 92gr and 92.4gr of powder (92.4 as max load on Lapua's website). the 92gr shot a little better. I'm debating to try a little less and see if grouping tighten's up at all but I'm keen on keeping velocity in the 2700fps range. Soon I plan on loading a couple different charges and sending them through a chronograph in 5 shot groups.

As far as a hunting bullet goes I use a 180gr Nosler Accubond in my .300wm and am going to try their 300gr .338 bullets they recently came out with. BC in the .7xx so for a hunting bullet it should fly pretty good.

Yup, been eyeballing this rifle for a long time and sold my car so I figured I could treat myself to something nice haha

finally got a chance to shoot today. of course i was busy in the morning and when i shot in the afternoon the wind picked up.  i set the zero stop on my scope and was happy to find that i was still zeroed at 200yds. jumped back to 500yds and typed some rough data into my ballistic calculator and was able to hit a large steel gong. i was also able to shoot through a chronograph with my reloads and a 4 shot average gave me 2782fps which i am happy with. i was hoping to break 2700fps so this is exciting. only about 17in of drop from 200-500yds, and the bullet still carries over 3000ft/lbs of energy! now that i have this knowledge the next nice day for shooting i'll be going for paper and see how i can group.
