Outside of Lake of the Woods, I've caught the most burbot on Rufus Woods while drift jigging for walleye in the winter.  Every single one I've ever caught out of there has had crawdads in their bellies.

Someone has been to/is from Minnesota. Lots of burbot/eel pout (MN name)/ Cusk (Maine name).

Home in Maine they fish for them with crayfish or night crawlers at night.

Cool pics.

Yeah Bank Walker....
I would love to go into more detail but I just don't have the capabilities to post big write ups.

I feel kinda silly talking in detail about a fish I have yet to fish for. But after a night of talking about these fish in detail with someone so knowledgeable I feel like I myself have fished them for years  :chuckle:

Here's one of my bigger Lake of the Woods fish from a few years ago.  I was convinced I had a 10# walleye on for a minute... but no, it was one of these slimy bass turds!  Good eats, tho-

Look it's a grumpy Lego fishing dude figure.   :chuckle:

Good info on a lot of these posts.  I'd like to try them sometime.

Naw, I got a buddy that lives just outside of Bemidji.  I really like to go back and icefish there when I can - Red Lake, LOW, Winnibigoshish, etc.  We've been going up to Canada every other year for the last couple of years, though.  Amazing ice fishing for plentiful big walleyes on Lake Winnipeg and the Red River below Lockport.  Been through Warroad a couple of times!

Right on, I miss that place. Do you guys fish for crappie on the Red Lakes?

They spawn in late winter and being hungry and grouped together make for easier targets.  They also can be found shallower as they stay at quite a depth most of the year

Dang, we used to catch them occasionally on Lake Winnebago in WI while ice fishing for walleye and sauger.    My grandpa hated them and would chop them up with ice spud.  He called them lawyers. Never knew they could be tasty critters.

Yeah, we got in on the tail end of the monster crappie boom on Upper Red lake.  It's not like it was 7 or 8 years ago, though, since the tribals started targeting them after they cleaned out the walleye.  I hear you can still get on some slabs, but not the ridiculous size and numbers we saw before.  Caught a few nice walleye out of there using rattle wheels at night, and some smaller pike.  One bigger one, too.
