My son shot his first 5 deer with a 243, 85-95 Barnes or Nosler work excellent and were quick kills. His longest shot 325 yards from one ridge top to the next with a BIG hole in between

A 243 is a "big gun" if you live in an Alaskan village......btw, they kill bears in excess of #600

You get a good solid bullet that holds up well and the 243 is a perfect deer hunting cartridge. Flat shooter and will kill just as well as many cartridges out there. I know of a native American hunter that probably killed close to 100 elk in his life and all he used was a 243.

Killed a lot of deer with the 243win. using Remington 100gr. Core-Lokts. Put the bullet where it needs to be and have meat on the table. :twocents:
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.

Think it'll work? What grain bullet? I've heard mixed reviews. Whatda think?

Nope, not gonna happen, no way has the 243 killed deer. I saw on the Internet, once, a 243 being used on deer. Bullet bounced right off, only left a little bruise. It has to be real, saw it on the 'net  :chuckle:

No sense in saying to much about it when most of us know what a .243 is capable  of doing in the right hands  :chuckle: I like 100 gr bullet for deer but we have killed many with a 85 gr bullet too ! Growing up I used to drop deer from our property over to our nieghbors property and it was a little further than 3 to 4 hundred yards  :chuckle:  Back east we drive alot of deer and I used to burn the barrel on my model 700 ADL ...Spent half my hunting career shooting at Pennsylvania whitetail and 85% of the time they are doing mock 90 across a corn field and you learn how to shoot real quick or you kill nothen ...Nothen cooler than watching a whitetail doing cart wheels across a corn field once you hit him ....If you are the kinda hunter who does not take running shots on deer then you best stay out of PA .... :chuckle: :chuckle: pLENTY OF GUN AND FUN TO SHOOT !!!

no doubt a well place shot out of almost any riffle will kill a deer or elk. I just think that there are better options inless the .243 is your only one . slip a .243 into the shoulder on a big muley and he will go a long ways , hit him in the shoulder with a .300 and drop him right there , thats the differance.

now that my daughter just past hunter ed  :IBCOOL: daddy gets to start shoppn   and i was thinkn about getting my little girl a 243 or a 270 in bolt action, i will probably go with the 270 only because it is a bit bigger and she really wants to kill a bear before she hunts anything else. i am not sure but i think you can get alot heavier bullets for the 270 than you can for a 243....maybe one of the gun experts could clue me in on this as well

Took my first deer with a Remington 788 in .243, still have the gun cause it killed the deer just fine.

Kids tend to shoot the smallest rifles the best....less recoil and muzzle blast. The difference between a 270 and 243 is only .034" and the weight difference between a heavy 243 and a heavy 270 bullet is about the weight of a couple Cheerios. Bullet selection for the 243 lends itself to be much more versatile round as it can be down loaded with light bullets for chucks and dogs or shoot bigger bullets for elk and moose.....all with much less recoil.

A light 270 can lay a pretty decent pop on the shooter, and who wants to start their kid with a 9 pound rifle?

i bought my son a 30-06 for his first rifle when he was 10, it was a savage synthetic youth model, he still hunts with it, yes he is a boy, but i would think a 270 should have a little less kick, and if i get it in synthetic it should be pretty light dont ya think, i will have to have her with me and make sure it fits her right and is light enough for her.....i can tell you this though, i never though i would ever get to go rifle shopping with my daughter, i am jacked up. so excited, its diferant than when my son and i went....i will have her check out the 243 just incase though, ya never know it might be the ONE that she cant put down....
