small bears
« on: July 31, 2025, 05:05:20 PM »
I've been scouting an area in foothills of western wash. dense/marshy/lots of berries. I'm seeing lots of bear piles everywhere, like more than I've seen anywhere else in a couple of years but it seems like I'm only capturing a small bear (2-3 year) on my cams, which I don't intend on shooting.

Is the area still worth hunting? I know young bears don't wander too far off, and the sows keep a steady home range, so I'm thinking there may not be a boar in the area--so the best shot for a big bear would be the sow (which may or may not have new cubs) and perhaps my energy would be better spent elsewhere?

I’m with wazzu on this one!  Even if you nab a small bear, you can always hold out with your second bear tag to bag the record-breaker if you want.

If you’re seeing small ones, I’m sure there’s big ones around as well so Hunt it

I'd almost rather shoot a smaller bear. Seams easier.

Where's this unit? The rest of us are willing to take out the small bears so the big bears can roam freely.

No kidding! Good luck on your bear hunt this week Dreadi. Hopefully he can get one called into pistol range for you. Been out this morning with just one bull elk spotted so far

Yes sir, big or small.

The only one I ever shot was a spring bear. About 150 lbs.

They all eat.

Getting after it next week.

Just consider this. When you kill a fish eating bear, get all the fat that you can off of it. Take it and have it smoked. If you like smoked fish, you will like smoked bear. I use the place in McKenna.
