I may be 100% incorrect and these research conclusions are 7 years old...

I asked around, read around, and here's what I concluded:
  • Nikon has better glass in the low/middle end
  • Canon has the fine tunings of colors, focus, image stabilization, mastered
  • Nikon has the upper hand as far as ergronomics and user friendliness
  • Great shots come from both
  • Pros carry both, but it seems like the best of the best usually seen with Canon

I believe when you get to the top end Nikon/Canon equipment, it's more a matter of preference than anything else.

I think Canon is a better choice for affordable professional grade telephoto lenses, but Nikon is better with their normal and wide angle zooms.  Canon might be better with portrait lenses though.

I keep an eyeball out when watching the olympics and the NFL out of curiosity of how many are shooting with what.   Olympics seemed heavy Canon, NFL, seems pretty even.

As most know I shoot Nikon.  The reason I went with Nikon is because I can use any Nikon F-mount lens on it.  It is nice to be able to get that quality "old" lens and stick it on my DSLR.  That being said though, I have noticed that Canon glass seems to be less expensive in price only. Case in point 70-200 f/2.8 lens with Image stabilization,  Canon=$2099  Nikon=$2397

Both are very capable in the right hands though.

Just wish I could afford that new D800

Canon for me. I did not really have a preference, I ended up going with Canon because the few guys I knew that were willing to help me out shot them so it made sense.
