Parts are mostly interchangeable from all the different companies.  You can get parts from all the different companies, as each one may specialize in a certain part(s).  Then it becomes a jigsaw puzzle for guy.  You can do all kind of combinations and really don't need a gunsmith or really specialized tools.  Fun projects.

I just bought one about a week ago. Pretty sweet they are amazingly simple. Wish I would have got one (or three) a long time ago.

The first thing to get and the single most important piece is the lower receiver. This is the part of the gun that has the serial number and manufacturer and caliber..............you get the idea.  Then like mentioned above, you just assemble the parts of your choice. Long barrel, 20", short barrel, Must be at least 16" for legality. Rifle stock, carbine stock, what ever grip you like. Scopes and mounts, tactical rails, folding sights.........man the list goes on and on. Since Colt's patend ran out, everybody and the family dog makes receivers.  There is a ton of them out there, but now the prices are getting stupid. Anything for an AR is on the rise. Once you build the complete power. Then you can pretty much have the upper in pretty much any caliber you want. Even pistol caliber's like 9mm and .45acp. Off the top of my head there is .223, 5.45x39, FN5.7, 7.63x39, 6.8mm, .50 Beawolf, .22lr, . When you get to the bigger calibers like.308 you have an entirely different receiver and barrel, etc. Next to the AK, an AR is the second most popular rifle on the planet.

Before all this gun control hype started, was or is it cheaper to build your own or just buy one already done? I dont know squat about bulding a firearm and am not sure I need an AR but they seem to be a very popular weapon.

after monday and tuesday even the calendar says Wednesday,Thursday and Friday.

Before the hype you could get a stripped lower for around $150.00. Go to Gunbroker.com and see what the prices are now.  Even now, probably the cheapest route would be to build your own.

I absolutely love my AR, I have built some and bought some already made.  Its a very fun platform to coyote/small game hunt with, as well as to just target shoot!  The semi auto makes follow up shots (or shots on a second yote) much faster.  I think everyone should own an AR, for the simple fact that they are just plain FUN to shoot!

bought my first AR last summer and now I am building one.

If you do your home work and look around, there are still some decent prices out there. My lower was $140, $99 for the parts kit ( but that was high) $133 for a upper with parts.

Check out You Tube for videos and how to assemble it and learn all you can.

Im building mine slowly, and recommend getting the a stripped lower first, then more on to other parts.

Captain Silver is building 2 now also and we share info or should I say, I inform him who has parts in stock  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Before the craze stripped lowers could be found pretty easy for $75 bucks.  Lower parts kit around $50.  From there on the cheap but still decent quality in my opinion you could complete the gun for about $500 more.  It was just about the same price to build as to buy.  Now with the panic buying....good luck, many critical parts such as bolts and bolt carriers are very hard to find in stock anywhere.
