GMU 371 any one hunted it before
« on: February 08, 2013, 09:59:21 PM »
I have been doing some research on this GMU 371 looking at putting in for the draw for elk this year. Just wanted to know if any one has ever hunted this area where it is on the military base and if it is any good

Hunted hard by the natives from what I hear. Challenges on what areas you can hunt any given day. Not a slam dunk tag at all.

how many points do you have? What weapon are you referring to?

If I had less than five points and was just throwing my name in I would consider 371, if you have any more points than that I wouldn't waste them on that hunt.  There are elk in there but they are hard to find.  The areas you can hunt are regulated and change on a daily basis so even if you find a 350 bull in one area, doesn't mean you are ever going to get to hunt him again.

Ask bildo to guide and call for you  ;)

Here is what I know.

GMU 371 is comprised entirely of the Yakima Training Center.

Access to, and exit from YTC is through one gate only which is near Selah.

You must show proof of insurance and vehicle registration to enter.

You must have a valid recreation card to hunt. The cost is $20 and is valid for one year.

You must register every firearm you wish to take on the training center.

You may not camp overnight.

The training center is comprised of 16 Training Areas plus some other zones such as the DMZ. The open/closed training centers change each day. You cannot know what will be open the next day until approximately 1700 hours the day before.

You must check in at Downrange Control each time you access the training center.

You must specify which training areas you wish to visit. You may designate up to three. If you wish to hunt a training area that you did not specify, you must return to Range Control and change your designation.

You may not enter more than two hours before sunrise and must be off no more than two hours after sunset.

Some of the training areas may take up to an hour to drive to. Most of the roads are somewhat maintained but expect to get a flat tire.

There are not a lot of elk on the training center, but there usually are a few.

The training center is vast: about 500 square miles.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

I got drawn for it a couple years ago with 3 points for modern. Me and my dad spent 8 days of hard hunting in there. When we got there opening to sign in they had all the northern units closed due to military training,(The whole unit is broken up into 16 mini units)  so we had to hunt all the southern units for 7 days without seeing any elk but saw lots of sign. Finally on the last day for us of hunting they opened up all the units. When we got there that morning we went to up to unit 16 and it was packed with everyone who had got drawn. Me and my dad spotted a heard of elk coming up from the alfalfa fields with 3-5 bulls in the heard. so we made a stock to them, we were a mile away from them when we spotted them and when we got half way there shots were sounding. when we got up to some people they had 2 bulls down a 5x5 and 6x5. then other people had a cow and a 5x5 down. so we kept hunting and we came across a 4x5 bull hiding so we got set up then he busted out and that's when I let him have it. 300yrds away and I was luckily to get him. My first bull. Its a good unit to hunt if you know where to hunt in there. And if the military doesn't take up the good units. And also BRING EXTRA TIRES! Me and my dad got 4 FLAT TIRES During That HUNT. I would put in for it again but I am doing WEST side this year.
