I'd go Yamaha or Evinrude.  Love the old Evinrude/Johnson 2-strokes, they last forever.

Love my 15 hp Yamaha 4-stroke! Sweat little motor, trolls at idle all day 0.4 mph with my 13 ft Smokercraft. No need for a trolling motor, and will do 26 MPH on a plane, with four adults in the boat.

:) I like my Yamaha 15, if I were to do it again I'd go a 20 hp, on a WC14 Lund, it was like $300.00 more for the 20 is all.

What are you using it for?  Kicker on a larger boat or a main motor on a smaller one?

Yamaha, Honda and Merc rule the roost in the 15hp 4S world.  Depending on the application, don't think you could go wrong with any of these as long as you get an FI model.

9.9 and 15 hp engine both started as a 15, only the 9.9 was detuned. I believe this is the same with the 20 and 25 HP?

Buy the 20 HP and get the jets for 25 HP, lol
Or remove the restrictor plate if they went that way.

A 14ft gregor plan on fishing bay, river and lakes, . New top of the line 4 strokes just seem to be so outrageously expensive these days. If I could only find a used one for half price with low hours. I'm leaning towards a Honda since I previously owned one.

Yamaha hands down. Had a 9.9 Honda that was a pile of junk. It never did run right.  :twocents:

I wonder if a yamaha 10 horse would push a 14 ft aluminum with 2 people,a dog and gear well?

I highly doubt you'd even get on plane.

The Yamaha 9.9 and the 15 HP are he same motor, but the 9.9 is detuned. Some years they changed the jets, some years they put a different restrictor or plate on. If you could find a 9.9 used, and change out the plate or jets, you would have a 15 HP.
The 15 HP would have no problem getting the 14 ft on a plane.

Al, I do not know about the 9.9 but per the Yamaha spec book both the four cycle 15 hp and 20 hp are; same weight per model,118 lbs short; 123 lbs long, same displacement 362 cc, same bore and stroke. On the 2 stroke 9.9/15 seem to be the same.

Oops I believe you are correct,
I can check my 15 HP 4 stroke manual when I get home.
