underwater bang?

i have shot my xd40 under water and it is a blast.  do all pistols shoot underwater?   are there any danger issues to be looked at before blasting away?  this summer i want to video a carp being blasted by a 40 or a 45.  mike w

I've fired several Glock's completely submerged. Lot of fun, and no damage to the pistols.
I've never had my head under though.

  it does not seem to bother my hearing, huh.  and yes everything was under.  the bullet only goes about 2-3 feet.  you gotta try it it a blast, got it a blast.  the bullet does not get bent at all.  mike w

I would worry about doing this with hollowpoints.  I see the bullet impacting water immediately, inside the barrel and expanding in the barrel.  Seems possible and also seems like a bad idea

only used fmj's  .  never thought about the hp, and wont use them.    i cleaned and oiled the gun before and after.    mikew

I actually don't think hollowpoints would make a differece as expansion occurs when hitting something at a high rate of speed.  Speeding a bullet up to exit the barrel is a much different accelleration than slowing it down would be.  Personally, I wouldn't do it at all though.

I think you can kill carp any way you want, kind of like starlings. The state doesn't want them around , they're an invasive, non-native species.

My cousin and I spent about 3 hours one day trying everything in the tackle box trying to get one. They were in about 5 feet of water and nothing. Finally talked to some guys bow fishing them and they said that is the only way.

i think you need a fishing liscense to fish for them .  that is a good question , can you shoot them and be underwater.  i dont want to gve anyone ideas, but dont use hollowpoints.   the youtube stuff was great.   mike w

light line. Squeeze a small ball of bread over a single salmon hook with tip exposed. No weights, bread will slowly sink, let your bait sink and wait. Pull your line in just until the bread slides toward you. ROd holder, rod tip up high, sit back and wait. Set hook after he takes it a ways to the side. Set and have fun. We have caught hundreds this way.

I figure the sound isn't as strong.  The projectile was observed going only a few feet.  That makes sense because it was launched in an environment 780 times as dense as air.  Nearly all the energy released was used to move the bullet through the barrel pushing the water ahead of it... so probably not that much sound at all.  Might be able to wreck your ears if you wrap the gun, keeping it dry in an ziplock back and then shoot it underwater, projectile will go much further, probably ricochet depending on the angle it enters the water.  Just a guess.  Not going to try it.

I remember an article in a major shooting mag (Guns & Ammo, Shooting Times, ?), can't remember which but a 1st gen G17 had been subjected to numerous torture tests since new (shortly after Glocks were marketed here when they were said to be utterly ugly, unreliable, delicate pieces of junk; since proven to be utterly unstoppable but still ugly). Very little cleaning, care, etc. and tortured to the tune of something like 20,000+ rounds after being dropped, run over, buried in dirt and mud...  The test was to shoot it under water (a common shark killer/deterrent) and then leave it submerged in the reef for 6 (3?) months before taking it out and accessing its condition, which was unchanged except for a small rust spot on the slide. After stripping and wiping clean it was fired with no ill results. Final test was burying it in a pile of cow crap and then firing it without cleaning.

Long story short, a major gun mag talked about firing a Glock fully submerged ( may have used a low mass firing pin but can't remember).

Bang sticks are either 12 gauge shells or other small arms bullets set up to fire on contact with a sharks head/body while SCUBA diving with no issues. sound should be no problem as much of the sound associated with shooting is muzzle blast and/or the bullet breaking the speed of sound.

I just can't see any reason why I would treat one og my weapons to that kind of abuse?
The pressures within the chamber must be incredible.

Carp will eat corn pretty readily too. Put 3 or 4 kernels on a small hook. You have to use light line and have a good drag on your reel. Also you can catch them on flies. Gold ribbed hares ear is a good carp fly. They fight really good and pull like a truck. If you hook a big one they will ruin a reel with a junk drag.  We used to catch them and take them to my dad's buddy. He owned a Chinese restaurant and was happy to trade whatever we wanted on the menu for carp. They loved to eat them.

They are fun as heck on a fly.   If you happen to time it right, you can get some real good top water action as well.  Banks lake is where we have targetted them in the past.  THere are some serious brutes in there.
