need to find new areas to bow hunt on the westside
« on: February 09, 2013, 11:46:35 AM »
This past year was my first year to hunt archery here in the state of Washington for black tail and I ate tag soup :bash:. I hunted all over Capital Forest and also JBLM. seen a lot of deer but was just annoyed by all the people on the capital forest. It seamed like when I was trying to close the deal some one would show up and spoil it. So i am looking for new hunting areas that are with in driving distance of the Olympia area and are good areas to hunt where there are not a lot of people. Not looking for your honey holes just new areas that are better than CF. Want to get started early so I can do some scouting any ideas would greatly help. Thanks

Try checking out some Weyerhaeuser land in the Vail area.

CF may have been more crowded than typical years due to everywhere else pretty much being shut down for fire danger.  But I do agree that it sucks when there are so many people up there.  (I haven't been up there ever since the Discover Pass was implemented though.  But I guess not enough people are refusing to buy it).

Was it still crowded in the late season?
May I always be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.

Define driving distance.
Be more concerned with your character than your reputation. Your character is who you actually are while your reputation is merely who others think you are.

The only way to get away from people is to put some miles on the boots. If the area is easy to get to more people will be there!
Remember that buck is climbing that Mt. every day!

Look into the 667 area. There are very few roads to drive on but a lot of roads you can bike on. That area is loaded with everything. Bear, Elk, Deer, Cougar, Coyote, Grouse, Rabbits & Grouse. That's  my tip for public land, but I would suggest knocking on a few doors and get permission to hunt private land. In the past, if I saw deer in someone's field, I would knock on the door. 7 out of 10 times I will get a guy that doesn't hunt anymore and is more than happy to help me. Just one note, if you hunt private land make sure to give something back to the land owner (meat or labor fixing fences, etc.) Private land changed my success rate 100%. Good luck

Try walking behind some of the gates around summit lake. You could go behind the gate before the ORV park on North side off HWY.
