Surf Pearch Marine Area 13
« on: February 13, 2013, 10:50:33 AM »
Looking to do some surf perch fishing close to home, the regs say its open year round in area 13. Anyone know if its worth the time end effort around the Nisqually area? All the videos ive seen and info Ive read seem to focus more on the coast

Different kinds of perch on the coast versus in the sound.  Used to catch Rainbow Perch in Coos Bay, very tasty, but sorry I can't help you down in Nisqually. Wish I could find them up here as well.

Ive seen Starry Flounder come off the flats in Nisqually, I think they are open year round, but not positive.  They are better tasting than halibut IMO.

i saw some dinner plate sized pile perch off the fishing dock at nisqually...but that thing has been closed for a long while now.  they're usually pretty easy to find around anywhere there's a bunch of pilings(like marinas).  hardest thing about catching them is getting your bait below schools of pogies, they'll pick you clean.

split shot and your choice of bait will get them.  i know pile worms work well but i thought i saw something about it being illegal to use them now?
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

If you have a boat, find the old ferry and barge docks around the south sound. Tie up, loosely, to one of the pilings and drop the bait down and have fun. Not sure what is legal to use for bait anymore so check the regs before you go. We use to use little crabs from under the rocks on the beach but I am pretty sure that is not allowed now.

I've always had really good luck with sandshrimp.  I've fished them more out at the coast, but the shrimp seems to work wherever.
