My First Oregon Lion!
« on: February 16, 2013, 08:12:30 AM »
While shed hunting we'd been locating an area where a lion or lions had been clobbering a wintering deer herd.

Yesterday my friend and I went in there and using blacktail distress sounds from his FoxPro, this big tom came sneaking in after 40 minutes of calling and waiting. I spotted him slightly to my left at 60 yds.

Nice mature male that we figured weighed at least 150 lbs.  Managed to tie the whole thing on the packboard, but was one of, if not thee heaviest pack I've had the pleasure of humping out of the woods. For comparison, I'm 6'3" and weigh 230#.

If we ever get the use of hounds again, I might try to let the air out of one with my recurve.  Thought about sitting a treestand and calling also.

Nice.
"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter

Can you give some more detail.. How slow was he moving, did you ever hear him.

I saw something brown move, but thought it was a deer at first since deer come in readily to distress sounds.  I was going to raise my binoculars for a look, but just eased my rifle off my knee so I could look through the scope. I saw the tail twitch and then made out the rest of the cat.  The call started again and he moved a little closer and stepped into a more open spot when I shot.

No, he never made a sound...that's why they're so successful in killing things to eat.

No sound at all. Caught movement of something brown behind some brush, further inspection through my scope revealed a twitch of the tail.  He slowly moved forward a few steps and gave me a shot.
