Questions on making a food plot
« on: February 12, 2013, 06:38:32 PM »
Hey I'm Kitsap county and we got 5 acres of land which has tons of big blacktail so I decided to make a food plot my first question was what you would plant I heard clovers would be the best bet but I don't know I can get some apple trees but any way my second question is how you would you prevent the deer from eating the clovers before the clovers mature I was thinking just a chicken wire fence the plots going to be only 1/4 of an acre so it wouldn't be big. thanks for reading info would be greatly appreciated.

I think you want them to eat the clover. You should also mow it a few times, makes it come in thicker and bloom better. If they naturally mow it down and you get pics than even better.

I have food plots for mule deer in eastern wa. I planted sanfoin and small brunette. They have a nice tap root to where the plant can take a lot of abuse and stay alive.  The mule deer love eating them. I'm assuming the blacktail eat fairly similar to mule deer. Also I had cows to deal with when I got them started and just put an electric fence around them and it kept the deer out as well to get the plots started.

I doesn't work like that. If you plant clover and it gets good sun and rain it will grow hip high. If the deer eat it right down to the nubs it won't hurt the plant it will actually make it come back thicker, like your beard! They won't eat the roots so it will come in good. Just plant the clover and you'll be good to go

What time of year would you want to plant clover? I have an area with a big apple tree right in the middle of it that gets hit hard by deer. But I would like to add something to keep the deer around longer, instead of just coming in and checking for fallen apples then leaving...

Depending on what crop you decide to plant it should say on the bag your optimal timing of planting and how many lbs/acre you should plant. But spring when the ground temps start warming up you should be fine and will give the deer the summer to find it to be ready for the fall to hunt.
