looking at an '03 Trophy boat
« on: February 23, 2013, 09:03:11 PM »
Was down at Cabelas today with the boy just wasting time and stopped to look at the boats. They have a used 21' Trophy down there that has my attention. It has the 4.3L Mercruiser I/O, compression test looked good (ranged from 175-185psi) and everything else on the inspection sheet looked good.

I've had my eye on one of these for a while, although I was looking at a slightly smaller 18'. I know that an aluminum boat would probably be better but I like the idea of the cuddy for when the kids come out. Just so that I can have a porta potty and a place for them to get out of the weather. I'd likely just use the boat out in the Sound. I still have a 10" fiberglass to run on the lakes. I just want a boat that's big enough to fish some of the deeper, faster moving water, like around the Narrows. My 10' doesn't stand a chance out there!

Any thoughts or insight you guys can offer would be appreciated. Cabelas is asking about $20K for it, so if you know of a better deal I should look into please share!

Andrew

Check out craigslist, boat trader and check out prices. Watch for dry rot or soft spots in the older fiberglass boats. And remember...

I think I saw in another thread that Bayliner was not using wood by 2003, but could be wrong.  Personally, I don't like inboards.  One neighbor of mine had to have his engine pulled out to change the starter, not a Bayliner though.  They just seem to offer up more problems than outboards.  I have a 21' 1991 Trophy with a walk-around cuddy cabin.  It handles the heavy water well, I plan on crossing Rosario Monday, no matter the weather, but there are better boats out there.  Aluminum uses a lot less fuel, generally, from my experience.
