Hi Everyone!
« on: February 24, 2013, 03:03:32 PM »
New, old, shooter here. Just thought I would start off with introductions...

I grew up just north of Vancouver, WA. Some of my best memories are of my grandfather taking me coyote hunting just east of Glenwood starting when I was about 13 years old. He's long since past away now, and after a stint in the Army I moved back to WA but found myself living near Seattle.

I haven't been hunting for the past 20+ years, but I'd like to start again. I started buying gear, reading the regs, gazing at maps, but I'm not sure where to hunt coyotes around here. I'm guessing it would be better to make the trip east over the mountains and try to find some huntable land where I won't be chased off for trespassing.

Anyways, after lots of internet searches I came across this forum and it seemed like a good place to try and reach out.

Good to meet you all,
-Tony

Well, I don't really have any pics since back then it was only film cameras, and what few rolls of film we took I have no idea what became of them.

But stories...and memories, I have lots of those.  ;)

Years ago there used to be a newspaper-like thing called "The Fishing and Hunting News", not sure if it still exists, but when I shot my first coyote my grandpa took my picture and sent it in to them and they put it on the cover of the next edition. Being a kid I thought that was the greatest thing ever.

The first coyote I ever had a chance to shoot was a complete disaster. Grandpa was using his mouth call (didn't really have electronic ones back then, there were some cassette tapes starting to come out but that was about it) and this big dog came running at me full steam ahead. I remember my heart beating so bad, and my whole reality being distorted, I completely panicked and didn't even get a shot off because I couldn't calm down enough to work the safety on my model 700. Grandpa was laughing his ass off at me and I just sat there looking red faced and embarrased. I remember he wrapped his arm around my shoulder and told me that's OK, it's called "buck fever" and it happens to all the new guys. It made me feel a little bit better, but I was still really dissapointed in myself.

After that one though I did a lot better the next time.  :IBCOOL:

There are literally coyotes everywhere on the west side.  Just find a legal road to hunt, start walking until you see fresh scat and start calling.  You don't often see coyotes form 1,000 yards out on the west side like you do the east side, but they are here.  And often times they are less shy of the call on the wetside.  Hides on this side are usually less than ideal, but the fun is just as good.  House cat, chickens, cottontail and rodent are all good calls to use on the west side. But think very small over here.  Sound like a 200# jackrabbit and you'll have quite the hard time getting one in.

Good Luck
Be Safe
Have Fun
And Welcome Aboard
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
