DIY hunts in Alaska?

Does anyone know of some published info on planning a hunting trip to Alaska for the animals that don't require a guide? A guide book or magazine or internet site dedicated to the nonresident who wants to go to Alaska on a modest budget? You know, drive up there with a trailer, maybe hunt from a drive-in camp or boat camp or bush plane drop-off? Any of you guys that do that a lot might consider writing something up for publication...I'd be a customer because if I do a bucket list, Alaska is on it.

Thats half the fun.....researching and putting it together and dreaming. I'll tell you one thing that they all say, your success rate as a non-resident is pitiful. Don't believe them. If you get your ducks in a row and are a hardcore hunter, you can do it. I know of at least two guys that did it, and they were 100% successful. Have fun!

Many, Many, Many places to do exactly what your looking for. There are several guys that will line something up as outfitters, Larry Bartlett out of Pristine Adventures... does DIY type setups for folks, heard he is pretty pricey though. The Alaskan Department of Fish and Game is great tool, they have info, planners, and other tips that you might need. Doing a drive up is good or OK, depending upon what your going for, Black Bear, Moose and Caribou are accessible from the road system for certain. Moose are probably the hardest to access from the road system, due to the amount of other "Residents" doing the same thing, if you take along a small jet boat your odds increase by five fold, if your arrange a fly out to remote float location your odds then ten fold. Draws for Moose along the road system are great, especially the ones on the military bases, odds are low but success is high for quality animals... As Bone stated doing your homework is probably the best advise to be successful. Black Bear, anywhere along the roads in the higher elevations can be glassed and spot and stalk.. Caribou, for the most part along the Dalton Hwy, 300 miles north of Fairbanks above the Arctic Circle is a great place to go, especially if you archery hunt and want to keep cost down to a nominal range. Five miles off the road is for rifle, just be very careful it is truly 5 miles from the closest point to the hwy... Numerous folks get hooked up by Troopers for violating this rule, five miles means five miles not 4 1/2 or 4 3/4 or 4 7/8.. They fly it regularly to check and land right on top of where your at. Another obtainable area is the 40 mile herd, near Chicken, but a crap load of ATV hunters shooting the heck out of anything that moves... Be very careful there, I will never ever hunt that area again for the amount of jack asses running around with large caliber guns... Steese Hwy sometimes is a good bet for the late season of migrating Caribou. Here are a couple web sites that might help you out. Good luck. Honestly, if you need specific information, I might be able to direct you to the right area to ask in the future. When you do get on the local Alaskan web sites, sometimes folks are really pricks, so don't go in hard cause alot are against nonresidents invading their areas... There are also Bison draws, anterless permits for Moose... And of course you can go with a HIGH MONEY GUIDE!
