Getting ready..........anyone ??
« on: February 26, 2013, 08:11:31 PM »
Had some time to start getting some gear ready for this halibut and ling cod season. Does anyone use the huge (250#) mono line for leaders and such, I need to find the right crimping tool for the sleeves and I cannot find it just wondering what you all use !!

Wonder if we could start some kind of lead melting get together where we could share our molds, something like the BD boys do ?  :dunno:

Have you thought about a wire fence crimper? Not knowing the size of wire your crimping. Check out a farm store for a set.

Hey Robodad,
I use 250 spiderwire for sturgeon leader and it ties nicely and you don't need crimps.
Not sure if it would work for your lings  and halibut? Love all your gear and molds.
Gonna go try for some pike on the pende orielle river tomorrow.

Getting ready to kill some brain cells?  That molten lead is good stuff.
How do those pipe jigs work for you?  I have a crate full of them and haven't tried them.
Cut em!

they work well were i fish at but the white jigs work better and i found if you melt a 1/2 in of lead in the pipe then let it harden then put bbs in the pipe then make a tin foil ball and leave some space from your bbs then top the jig off with lead it works better lings are curious fish. I have caught rock bass on the copper pipe jig with bbs in them. The bass hit them hard.

I went and took a couple pics of what I am looking for, I bought this one but I want to make my own and hopefully improve on it a little bit !!

Those sleeves appear to be aluminum and are just under an inch long but you get the idea, Its not about the strength of the line (250#) it just helps keep it untangled when fishing deep !!

We have done so well with the pipe jigs that I don't use anything else any longer. Check the CA regs for weight info on your lead. I know there use to be a max you could use. Can't remember what it was.

what size pipe do you use? and do you use a ring on the hook and put it on the cotter pin? i havent tryed that way before

It is quite surprising how well they actually work, I have been using them for years and my boat don't leave the dock without em !!

I have caught rock bass on the copper pipe jig with bbs in them. The bass hit them hard.

What I do is sweat a collar on the bottom and then 2" piece of pipe and another cap, inside the pipe I put a couple stainless screws one inverted on top of the other and they rattle even if the pipe jig is just swinging back and forth, I tried BB's and they rust really fast !! I'll also be painting some of them a white glow-in-the-dark which works quite well also !!

I won't make it to Ca so I'm not too worried about the weight, I'll be spending some time in LaPush hopefully I run into you out on the great pond !!

I use 1/2" pipe for the majority if the pipe jigs I make but also 3/4" for a couple used for really fast water !! I also put a #4 swivel on the cotter pin and a #10 snap ring between the swivel and the hook, I also use #16 circle "C" hooks on mine, some folks use large treble hooks which will work as well, I just prefer the Circle "C" hooks and haven't had any trouble hooking fish with them !!

Most of the lead I use comes from friends that need something made and I just trade them for half !!

Hopefully I'll see you in lapush this year robodad.

The crimps and pliers you're looking for should be at sportco, look near the tuna section or the line section. I use those same circle hook setups but I just buy them, almost never lose them. I mostly fish pipe jigs but guys get tired of jigging so I usually drop a circle hook setup and just leave it in the rod holder bouncing bottom.

I will be camping in LaPush the week of May 15-19 and hopefully Cohoho will be coming as well, when I know what site we will be in I'll let you know, I wouldn't mind swapping information with you. Yeah its not easy pounding the bottom with a pipe jig all day but it's too effective to put em away !! I'll have a look at Sportco if I ever get over that way, I did see some crimpers online but they are the type you bolt to a table and sort of resemble bolt cutters but they are $200+ so maybe buying the ones already made is a better deal after all !!

Maybe you could use bolt cutters from Harbor Freight - grind channels into the cutter blades big enough to crimp your stuff .The blade is big enough that you could even have 2-3 sizes in one . Another option is to cut (grind) the channel into the vise upper jaw - they could also be replaced ,right ? I'd say 10-15 minutes with grinder and you have crimping vise tool . Got any more problems that need to be solved  :chuckle:

I would never melt lead indoors without proper ventilation. That's asking for trouble fast! I only Burn outdoors on a good day. Or in the garage with a large fan at my back. I have seen lead poisoning affects and it ain't pretty.

Best tohave your Doc. check the blood levels when you get a phisycal. Just tell him your concerns. Don't think you need to worry about passing out. But just be aware of contact with lead. And wear gloves when prolonged handleing it.

My Brother in law work at a steel place spraying Red Lead Primer paint before it was baned. He passed on lead poisoning to my sister via clothing. She was pregnant at the time. Her Twins were born with lung defects that they allmost didn't survive. Whole family had to be checked for several years. They didn't have a clue. She died of cancer, any connection? Nobody knows or ain't saying. Do what you want, but I like to error on the side of caution.
