I've heard mixed reviews probably get it here to but will a 17hmr take down a yote and if so how close does the dog have to be for it to be effective?  I know I need a bigger bullet lol

I think 200 and under its a deadly little rifle for yotes. I'm sure there are those out there that frown upon it but I have no issue with using it.

Like with anything, once in a while you may lose an animal. If you do your part, the 17hmr will scramble a coyotes heart and lungs nicely. I sure like the round, superb accuracy! Its fun to shoot at empty shotgun hulls at the 100 yard range and try to knock out the primers. Crazy accurate little rifles! I tend to use the Hornaday 17gr ammo, but all brands have shot well for me.

thats what i use when i am predator huntn for bobcats and yotes, if they are within 200 yrds they are dead on the ground, i would only take a head shot though. only a 20gr bullet, i doubt shootn one behind the front shoulder would put it down very quick, although maybe a high shoulder shot would work....but i will never know cause i cant seem to call jack squat in

I have seen 3 dogs go down from 125yds -175yds. with the 17hmr in the chest.  All dropped dead in their tracks.
But, everyone hear knows that you will sometimes get those runners before they go down.  They can be tuff little whelps at times.

Shot placement is the key if you can't gurantee an accurate shot to the vitals woyj the .17 pass it up. I shot  a pup last summer with a 100GN .243 cal Sierra gameking and the S.O.B ran off because of poor shot placement. I found him about 60 yards from the impact site and he took off again only to be stopped by his entrails when they tangled up in the brush. Shot was 250 yards.

I shot a coyote broad side at 100 yards with my .17 and he took off like a rocket.  Went 200 yards wide open accross an open field and then slowed down,  walked 2 circles and went down dead.  It was a lung shot.
I love the thing for the ground squirrels around my place.

200 yards= not enough cartridge for me
If your looking to keep the hides I understand pushing for smaller being better...as long as your putting them down

The 17HMR is a fine little cartridge, when it gets enough penetration it's deadly on animals up to coyote size. Shot placement is vital, it is a killing little cartridge. I bought a Marlin 882 stainless bull barrel with the laminated stock. It's a tack driver and fun to shoot. I'd like to get this caliber in a handgun down the road. I'd like to get a ten inch bull-barrel made up for my Ruger Mark 2. I know several people who use the 17HMR for preditor hunting, they only get a small entrance hole, no exit.

Works I like to keep it within 150 yards for yotes, but clay pigeons are fun out to 300 yards

Not enough for me. Ive whitnessed to many runners with body shots past 125 yds. If your good enough for head shoots it will work but by no means is it a round id be confident with. Look how much energy they have pasy 100yds its not a whole lot (would you shoot a brown bear with the smallest round that can work in ideal situation only?) I dont like runners or wounded animals. Ive seen a lot of runners with the 204 rugers past 200yds as well with the litter bullets and body shoots.

I shot a coyote once with the 17 hmr with a 17 gr. bullet. Quartering away, mostly butt showing and head with just a little room for high shoulder. I shot for high shoulder and dropped it like a ton of bricks. Walked up on it and the shot had nailed the shoulder and spine paralyzing it so a finish shot to the head ended it. When I skinned  it I was surprised the first shot didn't fully kill it with the damage that was done. If I would have waited a little more it probably would have expired but I didn't want it to suffer. It was a cool experience though. Saw 3 in a lower pasture and the 17 was the quickest access so that's what I used. By the time I made a stock into position 2 were in the woods and one was left out there. 40 yard off hand shot. They will work just as said before shot placement is the key. That probably won't be the last one I get with the 17 hmr either. As soon as I get my new license I will be out there going for a few others because there has been a few pestering the area lately and have Been asked to solve the problem.

wind will play a large part on the little bullet. Your hunting partner farts and the round drifts alot.
Around a 100 yards no problem, dead calm maybe 150.
 
CZ452 Euro lux is a bad MOFO. My Bull barreled savage is a fine insturement as well.
But out over 200 I will hit them with my .223 or .308, (Spray)

I like this round out to 100 yards. I get 3/4 inch groups with it with several different brands of ammo but as usual they are the v max bullets.

I shot 4 coyotes last year with my ruger model 96 .17 HMR. All under 200 yards. All of them dropped dead on the spot. Didn't send them into orbit like a 22-250 but dead just the same.
