Birthday coyote hunt

Finally got a chance to do some coyote hunting. I usually take a day off on or around my birthday to do some hunting. I tried several stands but could not get a dog to come in. Between the wind and the bright sun it was hard to find a good spot to hide. Did manage to get some coyotes though. My first sighting turn out beyond my expectations. I saw a coyote run off in the distance, so I though I would see if I could catch up to him. Don't know if I ever would have because I came across a group of 4 between me and him. I shot one, and after he went down I took a couple more shots as the others ran off. While I was trying for the others, the one I hit decided to get up and run off after he had laid there for probably 20+ seconds. Never did get him. Turns out these five were snacking off of a calf carcass.

 I continued on my walk about and stumbled on another coyote walking along a bluff. I missed the first shot but connected on the second, it wasn't a good shot and had to put another in him. I want to take a moment here and talk about bullets. On the first coyote I used a 123gr MK out of my .260. After I failed to kill him I switched to 120gr BTs. The second coyote the first shot wqas in his guts. When I put him down I decided to use a MK to see what the bullet would do. It appears the bullet did not even expand. I could not find the exit wound. the shot was about 40 yards.
 

The third coyote I shot, I had just finished a calling stand and had walked about 50 yards. I don't know if she was coming to the call, or if it was just an accidental run in. I shot her with the 120BT. Bang, flop.


It was time to head back to the truck, so I decided to circle back to the calf carcass. Glad I did as there was two more coyotes close by. I managed to shoot one with the 120BT. I was a bit suprised because after the shot she ran a couple of yards and went down. Then while I was matching for her mate, she jumped up and ran another 20 yards, and did a cart wheel  before she died.

Wow....I think you shot more in one hunt than most of us in a season. Great pics.

Those are some good looking vermin!  Sounds like an exciting day.  Surprised by the .260 MK.  Killed a good number of vermin with the triple duece using them.  Always had good success.  Although I have to admit most were taken at night with a shot between the eyes.

   Just goes to show how much a carcass appeals to the critters!  Find a dead anything, and you got coyotes!

Good shooting Matt, amazing the rounds that a coyote can take before they finally throw in the towel. Perhaps try some of the Hornady 95 V-Max bullets out of the 260, those should do rather nicely on these late winter dogs, the results will be devastating but who cares about pelts this time of year. Great job

The hides were not rub, but not in prime.

I've got a box of 95 V-maxes to try sometime, but I am not afraid of using the 120BT during fur season.
