Rechambering a .270Win

I want to re-chamber my Winchester Model 70 Feather in .270Win to .270wsm and was wondering what a gun smith would charge to do it and exactly what it woul take. Its a gun that my grandpa passed down to me and has a lot of memorys but I want a flatter shooting gun. Thanks for any helpful comments!

Will need to pull barrel, set the barrel back. A ream job and the boltface will need to be opened. Or go with a new, already chambered barrel and installation. This is just a nutshell. Might as well square everything up and instal a new lug with either way.

What your looking to do ain't going to be cheep either. I agree keep grandpas gun and save some coin and but a 270 wsm.

you could buy a tikka for cheaper than it would be to alter the gun.

I looked on a few gun smith websites and it looks like itd only cost between 150 and 250....

remember the .270 is long action and 270wsm is short action I would think that can't be cheap to change over, I could be wrong?

that and the .270 and 270 wsm are pretty equal not really enough to justify the cost I would think. I would check ballistics on it.

your bullet is 225fps faster at the barrel with the 270wsm but i think you can buy a 270wsm for cheaper than you can convert. or get a 300wsm they are nice rifles.

the muzzle ballistics don't mean much, how often are you gonna shoot something point blank look at what range you are gonna be shooting and remember speed isn't everything. your gonna be shooting same weight bullet just a little faster if that is important i would go to a different caliber. the .270 and 270wsm are both great guns i have both and love them but i would think the cost to have a good gunsmith do the work out weights the cost of buying a new great gun. just saying but to each there own right.

it will help to look 200-500 yard ballistics with that cartridge and see what that works out to.

You have to be shooting 400 yards and further to really see any noticeable advantage of the WSM over the standard 270 Winchester.

that's what i was thinking bobcat it took a lot for me to buy my 270wsm since i had a .270 it was more of me just wanting a new rifle lol.

Keep the 270 like it is and buy a better scope and a good rangefinder.  You'll spend a lot and have feeding complications with a standard to magnum change.

It can be done but simply put..... You are making a mistake and wasting your money. You will very likely have feeding problems after the work is done so why risk it for 200 fps? Save your money and purchase a used 270WSM you'll be much happier with the end result.

I am in with everyone else ..Why would you want to change a rifle your grandfather gave you ? I would not ! people who own a .270 and are successful with it know what it can do ... I would never give up mine for any reason ...I never had trouble dropping deer -elk or bear and at all distances to way out there ! I just love a 140 gr bullet out of a .270 it does an awesome job everytime !

The .270 you have is I believe a 22in barrel.......270 wsm usually comes in 24in barrel, unless you custom order.....the ballistics you posted are most likely obtained with a 26in test barrel......less frequently 24.

Good advice here.  In the grand scheme of things, 200 fps is really insignificant.  I wouldn't risk a family gun on a project like this.

Load a good bullet under a good scope and go hunting.  There is nothing in the Northwest that you can't hunt with a 270.
     By the way Berger has some new bullets for the 270 made for hunting with some
Good BC's.

ballisticly the .270WSM is very close to the 7mm magnum, and yes exactly bobcat, I need that extra difference the .270wsm has past 400 yards because most of my shots are past that.

Man I would have a hard time doing that to a gun that my grandpa gave me. Not to mention you will have a short action cartridge on a long action receiver. Plus opening up the bolt face and mods to the stock and magazine will need to be done. It will be more expensive than buying a new rifle. This is just my opinion but I say keep the old 270 that way it is and if you are dead set on the 270wsm then buy a tikka or savage. If you are really needing a rifle for 400+ yard shooting I would consider a different round. Something with that will have bullets with higher b.c. Like the 6.5 mm's, big 7mm's, heavy .30 calibers, or even a .338.

I think the 270 WSM is a great cartridge, and if you're regularly taking shots beyond 400 yards, then it will definitely be worth having.

I shoot a 270wsm for deer. I use a 140gr. Nolser Accubond handload and this combo is very accurate and deadly. Only thing that I have a problem with is blood shot meat on shots at 250yds and under. Even behind the shoulder I still have blood shot meat. Either I will need to slow it down a little or change the bullet. Was thinking about the Nosler Partions in the 150gr. or even the 160gr. Not to change the subject, but wanted to let you know that the WSM speed over the standard  270win.
Far as converting your standard 270win. into a WSM, I would just save up your money and buy a WSM.

i don't hink the Ackley will make much of a difference compared to the .270 Win out of a 22inch barrel. I think I'll just look for a new gun. And just do you guys know, my grandpa was the one pushing for me to rechamber the rifle haha
