Tree killer down

Went looking for bobcats Saturday at Swift Bar, came home with a porci.

Not sure I could get myself to shoot a porky.  Maybe, if I owned an orchard or tree farm   

When I was younger we would just walk up to them and pull a few guard hairs out for fly tying.  Those work sweet!  One local lady made jewlery out of the quills and we'd get those for her.  A light tap with a foam pool toy got all one would need for that.

  I can't stand them they kill the hell out of all of our planted tree's that we have spent thousands putting in. Plus after about 10 times over the years of having to gather cattle to pull quills, I have no love for them.

When I lived in Alaska it was a urban Sour dough type of thing that you didn't mess with them because if you were lost and hungry it was one of the few critters you could kill with a stick

But I do remember running hounds and how much fun that was pulling them out of a Black and Tan!!!

If you like rabbit, by all means eat them.  Cook the same way!  Just a pain to skin....

My buddy on here is going to eat one this spring/summer when they are fit to eat. I will try to get him to let me film it or get some good pictures

I have eaten two, years ago. A young one was good, old one terrible. A instructor I had at Eastern said they are one of the most parasite carrying critters out there, cook well.

I did quarter him and made a stew on Sunday. It wasn't bad just chewy. I figured it wouldn't be too bad since it looked like he's been feeding on blackberry and raspberry leaves (where I found him). Also got about 1.25oz of 8 inch guard hairs off of him.

I think if you were to try to kill one with a stick, you'd starve to death. It took 2 shots of #3 buck shot to the head to put him down.

They are tough. pound for pound I would put them up against any animal in North America. They can soak up some lead.

They don't stand up to the undercarriage of a truck very well.       An arrow through the chest does a number as well, though I lost my arrow into the soft marsh dirt when I shot my last one at four feet away.

What do you use the long hairs for? I bagged one in Dec. and I am going to use the hairs for fly tyeing. What other things do they make out of the hairs?

I think there is a market for quills in native art.

The ones I have been around you can walk up and pet. I guess I embellesed with the stick maybe use a stone....Not number threes.

They are very easy to kill with a stick. It seems easier than with a .22 I have killed a lot of them with a stout stick. One blow across the bridge of the nose and they are dead. Any that came around the dogs, cattle or yard were handled that way when I was growing up.

Ten four................I have had some bad run ins with them back in the hound dog days. I think they smell kinda like bear cause had a mess of quills in the hounds alot of times.
