I'm looking to get started in lingcod and halibut this year. Do you have any good resources for info for a newbie?

I was thinking about heading out towards Willapa Bay or West Port.

Was thinking about taking charter cause I don't want to pul my boat to LaPush or Westport , but might not go after all . Work has been very slow and I need to pay medical bills and for me to go all by myself  :dunno:
Good luck to you

You could go spend thousands of dollars on the best stuff available and spend a decade trying to figger out how it all works but I have found that them two fish are the stupidest fish that swim the ocean and they conveniently are also the best tasting IMO !!

My absolute favorite is a decent jigging rod Ugly Stick makes decent rods, and a pretty nice reel, don't cheap out on the reel in about a 4/0 Penn Senator size or so and load it with a 65#-80# braided line such as "Power Pro" there are others that work as well, then get a 24oz-32oz pipe jig and round off the end of it on the rocks below. I can almost guarantee you will out fish most folks using other things !!
Find a location that has structure like a bank or rockpile or something and fish the outside edges where the ground is smoother for the halibut and on the rocks for the lings, I have not fished the places you have mentioned but can tell you the methods are pretty much the same up and down the coast.

What sort of equipment do you have already ??

Im definetly down to put in some fishing time! Been waiting to hit the piers allll fricken winter. Best I can do cause we dont have a boat, I caught a monster sole last year on the 300ft Indianola pier last summer, Was easily in the 10lb range, Lost him right as I was pulling him over the railing, Boy was I mad  :bash:, I dont think he was actually ever even hooked. Had a big ol shrimp in his mouth I dont think he wanted to let go of lol. Sad sad day. Was beautiful out though.

Cant wait to chase them six gill to  :fishin: Night fishing at Les Davis Pier usually has some good size ones. Never caught one myself but last time a guy had a 7-8 foot one on, Had to help him unhook him down on the rocks, Boy do those things got a set of chompers.

I'm getting itchy for August to get here. Well head down to Westport with the new boat this year to fish with Buckhorn2 and see if we can deplete the sea bass and ling population   and maybe a bear or 2..
