Bow Question?
« on: March 19, 2013, 10:31:20 AM »
I was wondering if my old bow would be able to do the job today.  I have an old Bear Whitetail hunter I used years ago.  If I got drawn for a multi season tag I may want to practice up and if I can still shoot what I am aiming for,  maybe head out for a trip or two.

Question is,  do you think that this old bow is safe to shoot?  And if so,  would it be like hunting with a willow stick compared to the new stuff out today?

Thanks..

Probably best to have a pro shop take a look at it.

If it killed critters then it'll kill 'em now.

I killed a cow elk with a Bear Whitetail Hunter. If you have the guns to carry it through the woods, it'll kill what you hit in the sweet spot.

If it checks out ok with a proshop and you can shoot it well it will work just fine within your limits.
Killed quite a few deer with a whitetail II years ago, long, heavy, almost no let off, not quiet at all and it was like shooting a red ryder bb gun watching the arrow travel in an arch, but it would through and through a big old easton XX75.
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.

Cables are going to be your big issue with it.  Not many shops carry or service those these days.  Also hard to get B-50 Dacron strings these days too.  After that amount of time I'd want to get both cables and string replaced.  Hunting is still hunting today as it was yesterday.  Only reason it wouldn't work is if the "Man Ego" couldn't handle it.  It's a lot more stable than most of the bows out there today.  Easy to shoot other than the 45-50% let-off.  I myself would go old school 2117's and finger tab.  Embrace the history instead of trying to make it into a modern miracle of engineering. Traditional training wheels of sorts :chuckle: Sounds like a whole bunch of fun to me!   Good luck!!!
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Don't forget that a pro wants to sell you a new bow. The main questions are 1. Is it fully functional?, 2. Will it carry me through the season?, and 3. Will it cost more to get it online than it would for a new bow on the lower end of the spending spectrum? If the bow works, it will kill critters.
