Dash Cameras
« on: March 19, 2013, 07:04:22 PM »
Anyone have one?
Thinking about getting one for my new truck.

Would like one that would run around the clock , recording in a loop.
Any ideas?

Looked at one last week ran off 12 volt , records to a SD card.

I don't have a recommendation but I do know someone who had a go pro and got rid of it as fast as he got it. I think he said the quality was crappy at best. But I have seen good videos recorded by them via YouTube so maybe he just didn't know what he was doing

http://www.videodashcam.com/march-special/ My parents are long-haul truck drivers and they swear by this camera. It's on all the time and it recycles data after 8-12 hour loops. They actually used it for evidence in a wreck. Not sure what purpose you'll be using the camera but for a dash cam I'd go with this one.

I absolutely do NOT recommend a GoPro as a dash camera. Smossy has one, we love it for hikes and adventures, great video and pictures, but the battery life lasts about 1 1/2 hours and you can't record while charging (so in a vehicle's dash would have to be small bursts of video). It doesn't recycle data, so you'd have to constantly delete the memory card or dump the data onto a computer and start over again. It's just really not meant for continuous recording, small action videos is what that camera is geared for. Hope that helps!

Gopro quality is great! Maybe he had the settings set in a weird way or on a low resolution. They are made for HD.

I love my lady but there IS a way to record from a power source :) I just haven't perfected it yet, But shes right about that link.
I played with her dad's dash cam they using for trucking and it works awesome. Thats what I would go with If I were you, and I dont think they're too spendy.

Make sure to "Lick" your lense, It may sound weird but Its a trick I learned from some Gopro Sponsors, Saliva does something to the fish eye lens that makes it water proof like, The case will get COVERED in water but the lens will stay for the most part, water drop/distortion free. The gopro COULD and WOULD work great, Its just pricey. The RAM Suction cup mount would be your best accessories for that.. Heres a link.
http://www.rammount.com/newproducts/goprocameramount/tabid/3665/default.aspx

Also if your going to be recording from the INSIDE of the vehicle, Make sure you have "spot metering" activated and Invest in buying a Skeleton case for the sound. It has open sides and back so it picks up sound better.
http://gopro.com/camera-accessories/hd-skeleton-housing
You can even add an external mic and power source :) THATS how you power/record at the same time. Virtually Unlimited Record time as long as your SD card has room. Cheers. Hope that helps you guys.

A couple of friends of mine went to the supercross and visited the gopro booth. If you give them your email address they sent you an offer to get $100 off a new gopro. If you arent going to the Seattle supercross but know someone who, have them put your email in for you. The only downside is that you only have a week to use it. $200 is a good price for a new gopro!

Well as some know in Feb. a gal ran a red light and totaled my old truck.
I was lucky to have a sheriff Dep. in the lane next to me.

The gal admitted she did not look at light to city police. A week later her insurance co. Called and said she had the green.

Took a week or two to get police reports before her insurance finally paid up.

If I had not had the LE witness it could have been a mess.

Thus thinking about dash cam.

Glad everything worked out in your favor, as it should have. Unfortunet incident though. My car is a classic and i would be devistated as it would be nearly impossible to get everything fixed and replaced if my car was hit.

AVI is typically not admissible in court, I'd look for something with propetary codec that is admissable as evidence.
You need MPEG-4

AVI is frame by frame and easly altered, so any lawyer would get it tossed.

Here is another reason to have one.  :bash:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=LR0L9LYyNw8#!

"A crowd forms around a woman splayed across the hood of a car stopped in the middle of the road. Several people drag her to the sidewalk where she doesn't move.

Sounds like a terrible accident, right?

In the case of the video above, not exactly. The woman is a fraud. She's faked the accident, probably in hopes of earning some sort of financial windfall from the real victim here, the driver of the car.

Luckily, the driver had a dashcam, which caught the entire sordid incident on a video that shows the car come to a stop moments before the jogging woman decided to throw herself atop the car's hood."

I just got a GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition.  Just want to share that this one has a setting for video looping.  When the card is full, it will start over writing.  I have not tried it yet.
