GOT'EM!!!!
« on: April 03, 2013, 10:32:14 AM »
Caught a big fat mole with hand and shovel! One of the most intense hunts ive been on. Took three days to catch since the first push up. Missed him/her once. Didnt miss the second round. I always enjoy the spring hunt for the mole. It rates higher than spring bear and spring turkey for me. :chuckle:

Looks like a trophy Townsends.  Did you weigh him?  I'm looking for the elusive 5-ouncer.  Came up just a couple grams shy on one a number of years ago.

That's a toad.  Probably 13, maybe 14mm skull measurement.  I'd like to see a mouth-open table-top rug mount done on one that big.

Every once in a while, I'll see my retired neighbor just standing out in his yard motionless, smoking a cig, pitchfork in hand, staring at the ground.  Creeped my girl out a few times when she would see him just standin' and starin'...  :chuckle:  He's let the air out of a few over the years with that method.

Have many different tactics for huntin the elusive moles. If its rainin ill set up the good old primos ground blind and waitem out. Somtimes ill just keep an eye on the most used mound site and act fast when i see new dirt. I do have an array of weapons on hand at any given time. Shotgun, pitchfork, shovel, gardenhose, and a stick. Somtimes have to sit on the roof of the house as to not spook em. One must be very cleaver with tactics to kill the mole or you will never succeed.

I saw an older gentleman the other day doing something similar, except he had a shotgun. I was parked and looking at a herd of elk in the back of his field. Then I saw him and couldn't figure out what the heck he was doing. At first I thought he was stalking the elk. But he was in the wide open field and he'd stop in a random spot and stare at the ground for a while, and he didn't even appear to be looking at the elk. Finally, as I was watching through the binos, I saw him reach down and pick up a mole trap. Then it dawned on me he was a mole hunter/trapper.

I want to try the propane and oxygen down the tunnel, followed by a little flame.  I heard about that and visualized the mole going out of sight over the neighbor's house.  I'd probably try it on the neighbors lawn first though.

My neighbor did that a few weeks ago. It sounded like a war zone. I wouldn't recommend this if you live in the suburbs or city.

Do you just sit and watch for them surfacing?

That's what i did then when the dirt mound started to rise i pounced with the shovel like i was diggin for a clam the old fashioned way and then when he flopped up on the dirt the flat bladed shovel got a mind of its own and 1 mole became 2 pieces of mole..Kinda cool actually.. Dropped him into the hole for his friends to see what's up if they too choose to hang out. 8) They're destructive as heck

I would advise against this method, a freind of my dads blew up his house with this method, the gas made it's way into the basement and found the pilot light for the furnace,ka boom, blew all the windows out.

I want to try the propane and oxygen down the tunnel, followed by a little flame.  I heard about that and visualized the mole going out of sight over the neighbor's house.  I'd probably try it on the neighbors lawn first though.
