Spring Bear Calling tactics
« on: April 13, 2013, 09:41:37 PM »
Ok lets talk Spring calling tactics. WHat have you guys had success with? Fawn in distress? Small game distress? Does anyone use a decoy? I drew a copalis tag so i know it is flat. I was thinking about setting up on grassy spur roads and small clearings to do some calling, but I am curious what calls/ tactics you guys use when trying to call bears?

I called in a couple bears with fawn in distress. This was in the last half of May, Capitol Forest. Seems that both times they showed up at about 1 hour and 15 minutes into it. So you need lots of patience.

I'm going to give that a try also. My son and I are going to be hunting out of tree stands at times, so were gonna try a little calling.

I think with how flat copalis is, I need to try calling. I will be out as much as possible, but definitely hoping to call one in close on film! So I have learned that I need to wait a while? Do you use loud calling, quiet? Ive never called bears

I used the "Fawn Bleats" sound from Western Rivers. That's what worked for me.

I'll attach it here so you can hear what it sounds like.

What do you think about a rabbit in distress call?

Spent the whole day out there today scouting.  There was only a few spots I found that would be over 150 - 200 yard shot.  Most of what I saw was 100 yds.   I think the problem you might have is getting that clear line of sight with your cam.  There are no ridges that overlook any great distance.
