Turkey weather sucks in Chewelah!!!
« on: April 19, 2013, 08:38:40 AM »
Man this weather is really frustrating! Brought my fiancé over here with me and we have been hitting my usual productive spots and there are hardly any birds around. We have seen 4 or 5 groups of hens and one group of 7 with 2 nice toms in it but other than that its been very quiet, no birds talking or even up moving. Was hoping to get the fiancé her first bird but its not looking to good right now. Hope things change this afternoon.

180 GRAIN - You're not alone, my honey-hole was very disappointing for the opener also.
Keep after it, when it's time it'll happen fast!

I was over there earlier this week and we killed 4 birds between 4 guys in two days.  The weather didnt seem that bad and the birds were actually talking ok.  We did get into a couple of groups that were henned up, but that's hunting.  Where abouts are you hunting?
The best friend a guy could have asked for. RIP chasing pheasants in heaven Denali girl.

I haven't turkey hunted in years. Now I've got a promise to keep with a girl that wants a Tom. Either things have changed or this is a weird year, but I'm running into lone hens like crazy. Have they already been bred or are things just way behind this year? Every Tom I've seen is with a hen, it's like there's too many hens in my area. Any tips?? Is this the norm?
The mountains are calling, I must go.

Hmmm....sounds like you should venture around more there.  Birds were talking good and hitting the ground the first couple days for sure. :twocents:

This morning it was dumping rain and blowing a little just seemed like nothing was moving. Covered a lot of miles and couldn't strike up a gobbler at all. It's warming up now and stopped raining so after a couple hour break we are going to see what this evening brings.

From the horses mouth...........Wa. opens later than most states ( april 15th ) because they feel by this time most years, 60% of the hens are bred.  For what its worth...........

The weather in Kettle is great today but the turkeys are seemingly non-existent...  Have been to several of our usual spots, have been at it all day.  Nothing...not even sign.

Oh well, that's the way it goes.  Going to continue to work hard, try something new.

I watched the birds for 4 days before season opened outside of Chewelah, I noticed the hens were breeding off early in the morning and the toms were on there own between 8 and 9 am.

Just got home from KF and I found there to be very little bird activity! I didn't have one single response to my calls either locater or turkey. I did not see any birds on public ground (only yard birds while driving.)I found very little sign in all my usual spots. I hunted high and low and the story was the same every where. Only heard on faint gobble on Tuesday evening. Stopped by the LPNW and a few other spots I know on the way home and found the same results, no birds no sign. Good ouck to all who are out this weekend!
Fish hard, hunt harder!

Battleready and I spent the first two days over with Bearpaw.  Man!  Those birds were talking an hour before light.  I took my two birds with the bow before lunch the first day.  Battleready took both of his birds the second day.  Most everyone else staying there were into birds as well.  One guy got a single shot double the first day.  Bad weather sure didn't seem to be effecting how much they were talking.  But it does look as though it's an early year and some of the hens are already nesting.  That might be effecting some of the public land hunting for sure.  Almost all of the toms I saw looked to be well on the way to losing feathers on their chest from mounting hens for a while now.
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Well found a few birds on private ground but nothing in my usual spots. Bird numbers do seem low this season. Something is not right. I will say I think the game department should issue a few doe tags for unit 117 there is a ton of deer this year.
