Another newby with a couple questions
« on: October 05, 2008, 09:11:54 PM »
Hi all,
I am new to black powder and have a couple questions I hope you can help with.
I noticed that TC Maxi balls come all lubed up.  Do you also have to lube the Hornady Great plains bullet?
What is the purpose for the lube?
If it is needed for the Great Plains bullet, what lube should I use?
Is there a better bullet for a .54 Lyman Deerstalker?

Thanks for any responses.

The Great Plains bullets do have a lube it's a dry film lube. They are my favorite projectile in my .54 Deerstalker. If you notice the bullets feel sticky, that's the lube.

I would also advise trying a bunch of different bullets at first ... I know that just cause one barrel likes em doesnt mean every one of that model does! you may need to expireament with several bullets and loads until you find the right one ... but definatly start with marc1000's suggestion just don't be discouraged if they don't work out the same for you.  :)

I agree with M_ray try everything on the market in the way of projectiles. The old timer who got me started said each gun is unique and needs to be tuned to find the best load. I shoot a TC Hawkin .54 and the most accurate is the Buffalo Bullets Conical 435G on top of 110 grains of FFFG. My hunting partners Hawkin will not group them but a sabot bullet he uses groups great with 105 grains. In  my junk box I have partial boxes of TC, Hornaday and other stuff for the next garage sale.

That's a great combo for sure!!
