From the Gopro to the down-rigger wire. Just in-case there is a failure.

Or, you could purchase one of these:
They are expensive at $150.00 but well worth it I think. I'll be ordering mine soon.

Ive seen those on ebay for $100 every now and then. Ive also seen that housing made from ABS reducer, pipe and a cap for the true DIY'er.  I would definately make it big enough to where you can put the dive housing on for under water though.
Judge if you want, we are all going to die.

I intend to deserve it.

Ive already seen that. Were trying to avoid spending that much being as the cameras already spendy itself.. Can spend 10-30$ in parts and build our own.

Its a 3 so it comes with a built in dive housing. Im developing h2os based off that model. It looks like a clamp on lamp to me. Thats where I got the idea. Can get metel tin and cut it to fit as a fin. This is more a DIY thread not lets take the easy route and spend lots of money.

My fear out in the salt is when you loose the cannon ball, dont know if a tether would save the gopro that way either.

I understand. I've only ever lost one ball and that was due to my own lack of paying attention. I would only use the GoPro while I'm in open water for pinks/silvers. Probably wouldn't use it for blackmouth...to close to dragging bottom.

So I wlll post the link later it is on my Facebook account and I can't do it from my iPhone.   I had my gear about 6-8 feet behind the Downrigger ball.  My camera has a 135 degree filming angle so it captured everything just fine.   The depth depends on a lot of things like sun, time of day and crap in the water.    But I was doing good at around 60 feet.
